Masterbatch = butyl 218-100, GPE black-70, paraffinic oil-25, 2inc oxide-5, and promoter-1. 

Black masterbatch can be made with or without oil-extended SBR. Commercially there are available, worldwide, 11 numbered ESBR cold black masterbatches and 15 ESBR cold oil-black masterbatches (27). These types range in black type and content as well as oil type and amount. Of course, not every listed product is available from every supplier. 

Masterbatches with Carbon Black. Two producers (Zeon Chemicals and Copolymer) offer nitrile mbber—carbon black masterbatches. These grades are prepared by mixing the carbon black with the mbber latex prior to the coagulation and drying process. 

In order to test this concept a series of compounds was prepared in a 5 L Shaw Intermix (rubber internal mixer, Mark IV, Kl) with EPDM (Keltan 720 ex-DSM elastomers an amorphous EPDM containing 4.5 wt% of dicyclopentadiene and having a Mooney viscosity ML(1 +4) 125°C of 64 MU 100 phr), N550 carbon black (50 phr), diisododecyl phthalate (10 phr), stearic acid (2 phr), and l,3-bis(tert-butylperoxy-isopropyl)benzene (Perkadox 14/40 MB ex Akzo Nobel 40% active material 6 or 10 phr). A polar co-agent (15 phr) was admixed to the masterbatch on an open mill and compounds were cured for 20 min at 180°C in a rheometer (MDR2000, Alpha Technologies). Black incorporation time is less in case of masterbatch. 

Oil extended SBR, and SBR carbon black masterbatches are supplied by the polymer producers and such grades give the advantage of reducing the necessity of further additions of filler and oil at the mixing stage. 

Non-black antistatics allow surface resistivities roughly in the range of 10 to 10 ohms per square to be obtained but their action generally depends on the relative humidity. However, new generations are being marketed without this drawback and are efficient at a relative humidity as low as 15%. Some are offered in masterbatches based on polyolefins, polystyrenes, polyesters, acrylics, ABS, polyacetals. .. 

There are specific grades and masterbatches of carbon blacks especially marketed as additives for conductive plastics. It should be noted that the carbon blacks modify other properties of the polymer, especially its colour.

As discussed in Section 11.12.2, several root causes exist for black streak contamination in molded parts. These root causes include degradation of the resin in the screw channels and nonreturn valve or runner system, degraded material entering with the resin feedstock, and poorly dispersed pigments in the color masterbatch. A Maddock solidification experiment was performed using ABS resin at a screw speed of 60 rpm [30]. Like the solidification experiment for the ET screw of Section 14.2.2, the feedstock resin contained 2% Ti02 compounded into the pellets, and a black-colored masterbatch was added at a letdown ratio of about 220 1. The cross-sectional views of the resin solidified in the channels are shown by Eig. 14.15. The white pellets and unmixed resin are visible in the views as white regions. The regions that are well mixed are an evenly colored dark or black color. 

In-process controls for the reduction of wastewater flows and loads for emulsion crumb mbber plants include recycling of finishing line wastewaters and steam stripping of heavy monomer decanter wastewater. Recycling of finishing line wastewater occurs at nearly all emulsion crumb plants with the percent recycle depending primarily upon the desired final properties of the crumb. Approximately 75% recycle is an achievable rate, with recycle for white masterbatch crumb below this level and that for black masterbatch crumb exceeding it.

As formed, carbon black is a fluffy powder possessing low density. The densification process involves the removal of occluded air by agitation and followed by dry or wet process pelletization. In both the dry and wet pelletization process, nearly spherical pellets or beads will form that are typically composed of >99% carbon black and trace impurities such as sulfur. Thus, carbon black is sold as a low density powder or as a pelleted form in pigmenting and other end uses. The choice of a fluffy or pelleted carbon black for dispersion in a given system depends upon the dispersion and handling equipment and end use. For example, pelleted carbon blacks are used most frequently in production of black masterbatch carbon black powders are typically used to tint chromatic compounds.
