Hercules and B. F. Goodrich are no longer in the polyether manufacturing business. In 1986, Hercules sold its polyether elastomer operation to B. F. Goodrich, which, after operating it for several years, in turn sold it and their whole specialty elastomer division to Zeon Chemicals USA, Inc., in 1989 (14). Zeon Chemicals USA, Inc., is a subsidiary of the Nippon Zeon Co., Ltd. At the present time, manufacture of polyethers is done by Zeon Chemicals in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Nippon Zeon in Tokuyama, Japan, and Daiso in Mizushima, Japan. Total production is estimated to be 13,000 to 15,000 tons per year.

This section is concerned with poly(alkylene oxide)s having sufficiently high molecular weight to be gum stocks rather than the liquid polyols used to prepare polyurethanes, polyureas, and polyurethane-ureas that are discussed elsewhere. Gumstocks such as those described herein can be compounded, shaped, and cured by means of chemical reaction. As an addendum to the information in this section, it should be noted that BF Goodrich has signed a letter of intent to sell its elastomer business to Zeon Chemicals USA, Inc., a subsidiary of Nippon Zeon, Tokyo (96). Poly(propylene oxide) and poly(epichlorohydrin) elastomers are available from Zeon, whose corporate headquarters and R D center are located in Louisville, Kentucky, rather than at BF Goodrich.
