The objectives of this laboratory-scale test were to quantitatively assess the rate and determine the mechanism of transfer (diffusional versus electrochemical) of organics and their breakdown products across the membrane (AEA, 200lj). For the test, a small, laboratory-scale SILVER II plant was constructed at Aberdeen Test Center at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, to accomplish the following ... [Pg.71]

These results stimulated a number of studies, both in industry (Conoco, Esso, Shell Pipeline) and in academia (University of Maryland, M.I.T.). The objective was, primarily, to delineate the mechanism that led to these explosive events. The results of many small-scale experiments, primarily conducted by Shell Pipeline Corporation and M.I.T., led to the hypothesis that the apparent explosion was, in fact, a very rapid vaporization of superheated LNG. Contact of LNG, of an appropriate composition, with water led to the heating of a thin film of the LNG well above its expected boiling temperature. If the temperature reached a value where homogeneous nucleation was possible, then prompt, essentially explosive vaporization resulted. This sequence of events has been termed a rapid phase transition (RPT), although in the earlier literature it was often described by the less appropriate title of vapor explosion. [Pg.114]

As an extension of the research at NAWC/WC, Ken Yu (presently at the University of Maryland) conducted an experimental study to understand the physical mechanisms associated with active combustion control (ACC) of liquid-fueled systems (Chapter 21). The novel feature of the study involves direct... [Pg.9]

States with such laws are Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin. In 2003 Maryland became the first state to require that all new handguns sold include internal trigger locking mechanisms. New Jersey has passed a law requiring smart gun technology that allows guns to be fired only by authorized users, but the law... [Pg.43]

This chapter focuses on the synthetic and supramolecular chemistry of the cucurbit[n]uril (CB[n] n = number of glycoluril units) family of macrocycles. Our research in this area, which began in 1998 at the University of Maryland, has been largely driven by our efforts to understand the mechanism of CB[n] formation. The chapter is therefore organized around that theme and is illustrated by subsequently developed applications of the CB[n] family. [Pg.113]
