Should gun manufacmrers have to meet safety standards like those applied to other consumer products Should certain safety devices such as a trigger lock or a loaded indicator be required ... 

Will requiring trigger locks and other safety devices on guns save lives Or might it give people a false sense of security or cause more people to be victimized by crime because they can t get to their gun in time ... 

Legislation proposed in Congress in recent years would require that trigger locks be offered with all new handguns sold. 

States with such laws are Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin. In 2003 Maryland became the first state to require that all new handguns sold include internal trigger locking mechanisms. New Jersey has passed a law requiring smart gun technology that allows guns to be fired only by authorized users, but the law... 

Beretta replied that the gun already had a safety device that the young shooter had to disengage before firing. They also argued that trigger locks and locked gun cases were readily available, but Michael s parents had not chosen to use such devices.
