At the same time, Dow moved to bolster its position in pharmaceuticals by acquiring a leading mid-sized firm, Marion Laboratories. Dow consolidated its new property with Merrell-Dow Pharmaceutical and its Allied Laboratories to form Marion Merrell Dow, the ninth-largest pharmaceutical company in the United States. To finance this move, it took the company public while retaining 67 percent of its equity. ... 

In the words of a senior executive who advocated the purchase, Marion Laboratories had the premier sales organization in the United States. But, he added, It had no research worth the name, and fairly mediocre manufacturing facilities. Reality struck quickly. By 1993, earnings per share dropped sharply. Senior managers had become fully aware of the basic weaknesses due to the expiration of patents in its major businesses. SELP5 sponges were similarly evaluated. 2 x 2 x 0.4 cm specimens were applied to 2 X 2 cm fidl thickness, dermal wounds in pigs and compared to 2 x 2 x 0.3 cm specimens of Helistat (collagen hemostatic sponge, Marion Laboratories, Inc., Kansas City, MO.). After bleeding was controlled and the wound flushed wth saline, the specimens were laid into the tissue void such that they would firmly contact the wound bed. The sponges adhered well to the wormd bed and resisted removal under mUd tension.

Recent smooth muscle constrictor studies performed in our laboratory in collaboration with Dr. Marion Buck at Yale University have yielded interesting results. Various fractions were first tested in human volunteers for bronchoconstrictor activity and then bioassayed by the rat stomach strip isolated organ bath technique. The fractions demonstrating constrictor activity in man correlated precisely with the constrictor activity in the isolated organ bath. This effect was antagonized by methysergide (6 ).

I wonder if we can learn something from that, so we can at least keep the numbers constant, if not increase them. Do you know why there was a dip in the total number of chemists ...

Langmuir returned to America and became an instructor in chemistry at the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey, where he taught until July 1909. He next took a job at the General Electric Company Research Laboratory in Schenectady, New York, where he eventually became associate director of research and development. In 1912 he married Marion Mersereau, and they had two children.
