The largest market for elastomer-based adhesives is that of lamination (see Laminates). Modem office furniture having Formica as a surfacing material is made with an elastomer-based adhesive. Tile adhesives for ceramic or carpet tile are also elastomer-based and usually solvent appHed. Paper adhesives and shoe manufacture also use substantial quantities of mbber-based materials. Steel. The steel container s most usual form is cylindrical with a concave (or flat) bottom and a convex top dome with a circular opening finished to receive a valve with a standard 2.54-cm opening. The three pieces (body, bottom, and top) are produced separately and joined by high speed manufacturing. The size of the container is described by its diameter and height to top seam, in that order. Hence a 202 x 509 container is 54.0 mm (2 /jg in.) in diameter by 141.3 mm (5 /jg in.) high. Tables of available sizes and overflow volumes and suggested fill levels can be readily obtained from manufacturers. [Pg.349]

Foundry Resins. In the foundry industry, phenoHc resins are used as the binder for sand in the manufacture of sheU molds and cores. The two mating halves are joined by clamps or a bonding agent to form a sheU mold into which the molten metal is poured for castings. The sheU is formed by depositing a resin—sand mix on a hot metal pattern plate. After a certain period the pattern is inverted and the excess resin sand is removed. The sand particles are bonded by an oven cure, and the sheU is ejected from the pattern plate. [Pg.305]

Hyphenated analytical methods provide more complementary information in a shorter time period leading to faster and more reUable results, than data obtained from traditional instmmental methods. The types of analytical instmments that can be joined is very large depending only upon the nondestmction of samples after the initial analytical procedure and the ability of the manufacturer to interface the instmmental techniques. Gas Fluxing. The methyl borate azeotrope is used as a gaseous flux for welding and brazing. The Gas Flux Co., Elyria, Ohio, manufactures the methyl borate azeotrope for their own use. The azeotrope acts as a volatile source of boric oxide and is introduced directly into the gas stream as a flux for the surfaces to be joined in the welding process. The European automobile industry is the primary user of this process, though there may be some usage for this purpose in the United States. [Pg.216]

In joining reinforced thermosetting pipe it is particularly important that the pipe be cut without chipping or cracking it. It is also important to sand, file, or grind any mold-release agent from the surfaces to be cemented. Joints are built up layer by layer of adhesive-saturated reinforcement by following the manufacturer s recommended procedure. Application of adhesive to the surfaces to be joined and assembly of these surfaces shall produce a continuous bond and provide an adhesive seal to protect the reinforcement from attack by the contents of the pipe. Unfilled or unbonded areas of the joint are considered defects and must be repaired. [Pg.1005]
