Main pigments, classification

Classification schemes have been devised that take into account the lability of tunicate blood cells (137,138). In one scheme (138) four main categories of tunicate blood cell are recognized stem cells, amoebocytes, vacuolated cells, and pigment cells (Fig. 4). Main categories are further subdivided in Ciona intestinalis, for example, hyaline amoebocytes are numerous and comprise 30% of the total blood cell population (139).

Carbon black represents the most commonly employed elemental pigment used in PVC and perhaps the entire plastics and rubber industry. While more ofien employed as a reinforcement in elastomers, carbon blacks of a wide variety and source are excellent colorants for PVC. Three main classifications of carbon black are channel blacks, furnace blacks and thermal blacks (21). Channel blacks give very good UV stability (63,64), furnace blacks are recommended for electrical insulation (65), and thermal blacks are lowest in cost...

Nutritionally, the main physiological function of the carotenoids is their capacity as precursors of vitamin A, so that they are said to have provitamin A value.
