Made with Good Intentions

The first series of modifications featured in this chapter were all motivated by Good Intentions. In spite of creative ideas and considerable effort, these modifications failed because no one took the time to examine and expose their weaknesses. These undetected weaknesses caused undesired side effects. [Pg.23]

Levonantradol (8.4) was synthesized with the intention to introduce a basic amino function into the heterocycle in the hope of obtaining water-soluble salts. Although the solubility of the hydrochloride is not good it was possible to get stable aqueous micellar solutions with the aid of emulsifiers [145] and the compound made its way as an injectable into clinical trials, but never was approved. [Pg.34]

The second section provides basic protection against the passing off of goods as patented or as the product of a patent holder. 35 U.S.C. 292 imposes a maximum 500 fine for every use of the name or imitation of the name of the patentee, use of the patent number, and use of the words patent or patentee or the like, if such act was intended to imitate the mark of a patentee or to deceive the public by inducing them to believe that the thing was made or sold by or with consent of the patentee, or if the act was committed with the intent of leading others to believe falsely that an item was patented. The statute allows private parties to sue for and recover one half of the penalty. Thus,... [Pg.262]

As previous studies also indicated, convenience with easy access and savings in time consmnption and effort were important in disposal decisions. These decisions were seldom made due to environmental considerations, here exemplified again by Camilla I guess I always have ambitions to give away clothes that are not damaged and like that. But it is more because I think that it is stupid to throw away clothes that someone can use, not necessarily because of the environment [...] But often it s a bit cumbersome to deliver clothes to a specific place. Then I don t get it done anyway, and then it just lies there, until I eventually throw it away. This shows one of the problems related to the disposal process. The consumers may have good intentions, but the possibilities and practical hindrances may stop the intended behaviour. [Pg.357]

No doubt, we are only at the brink of this process. Thus, it is with the intention of linking coordination chemistry and biochemistry in their widest sense that the Metal Ions in Biological Systems series reflects the growing field of bioinorganic chemistry . We hope, also, that this series will help to break down the barriers between the historically separate spheres of chemistry, biochemistry, biology, medicine, and physics, with the expectation that a good deal of future outstanding discoveries will be made in the interdisciplinary areas of science. [Pg.279]

To receive a filing date, an appHcation made on the basis of intent-to-use must include "a claim of bona fide intention to use the mark in commerce," a description of the goods upon or in connection with which the appHcant has the intention to use the mark and the mode and manner in which it is to be used, and a statement that the appHcant is entitled to use the mark and that, to the best of the appHcant s knowledge, no other person or entity has the right to use the mark or a confusingly similar mark. A drawing of the mark must be submitted with the appHcation. [Pg.270]

If 2-methylfuran is to be made intentionally, it was found that the reaction temperature should be 250 °C (instead of 135 °C for furfuryl alcohol), and that the copper chromite catalyst should be mixed with activated charcoal [110]. As the reaction is highly exothermic, good care must be exercised to prevent an inactivation of the catalyst by overheating. [Pg.229]

In Fig. 7.17, the dry modulus of various PDMS networks is plotted as a function of their equilibrium swelling in toluene. A single curve results for both model networks (open symbols) made by end-linking linear chains with two reactive ends and networks with intentionally introduced defects in the form of dangling ends (filled symbols) made by end-linking mixtures of chains with one and two reactive ends. The data are fit to Eq. (7.91) as the solid lines in Fig. 7.17 and their intersection determines the crossover concentration 0 = 0.2, which is typical for good solvents. [Pg.280]
