Mag nesia. ndAlumina. Suspension. A mixture of salts, available as Maalox, Mylanta, Gelusil, and Aludrox, contains magnesium hydroxide [1309-42-8] Mg(OH)2, and variable amounts of aluminum oxide in the form of aluminum hydroxide and hydrated aluminum oxide, ie, 2.9—4.2% magnesium hydroxide and 2.0—2.4% aluminum oxide, Al O, for a mixture of 4.9—6.6% combined magnesium hydroxide and aluminum oxide. This mixture may contain a flavoring and antimicrobial agents in a total amount not to exceed 0.5% (see Aluminum compounds, aluminum oxide). [Pg.200]

Aluminum hydroxide is used in stomach antacids (including Maalox , Mylanta , and Delcid ), as a desiccant powder in antiperspirants and dentifrices in packaging materials as a chemical intermediate as a filler in plastics, rubber, cosmetics, and paper as a soft abrasive for brass and plastics as a glass additive to increase mechanical strength and resistance to thermal shock, weathering, and chemicals and in ceramics (HSDB 1995). Aluminum hydroxide is also used pharmaceutically to lower the plasma phosphorus levels of patients with renal failure (Budavari et al. 1989 Sax and Lewis 1987). [Pg.198]

Animals should be bathed with soap and copious amounts of cold water. Using small amounts of water can actually increase irritation (Lee et al, 1984). Topically applied magnesium hydroxide-aluminum hydroxide-simethicone suspension (Maalox Max ) caused resolution signs within 2 min after application after exposure to OC. If chemical bums develop, clean wounds with a mild disinfectant soap and water. Pain control and antibiotics may be needed. Tetanus toxoid should be given if bums are present. With oral ingestions, antacids may help decrease gastrointestinal signs. [Pg.732]

One mole of magnesium hydroxide is required to remove 2 mol of hydrochloric acid. Antacids related to this are Amphogel [Al(OH)3] and Maalox [a combination of Mg (OH) 2 and A1(0H)3]. In the case of aluminum hydroxide, each mole of Al(OH)3 can remove three moles of acid. [Pg.1164]

Although small amounts of calcium carbonate are safe, regular use can cause constipation. Aluminum hydroxide, the active ingredient in Amphojel, can also cause constipation in large doses. Because calcium carbonate and aluminum hydroxide can cause constipation, antacids such as Maalox and My-lanta contain aluminum hydroxide mixed with magnesium hydroxide to counteract the constipating effects of the former with the laxative action of the latter. [Pg.200]
