Quartz also has modest but important uses in optical appHcations, primarily as prisms. Its dispersion makes it useful in monochromators for spectrophotometers in the region of 0.16—3.5 m. Specially prepared optical-quality synthetic quartz is requited because ordinary synthetic quartz is usually not of good enough quality for such uses, mainly owing to scattering and absorption at 2.6 p.m associated with hydroxide in the lattice. [Pg.521]

Note particularly that it is liters of solution that is used, not liters of solvent. Chemists often abbreviate the definition to merely moles per liter, but the shortening does not change the way the unit is actually defined. The unit of molarity is molar, symbolized M. Special care must be taken with abbreviations in this chapter. M stands for molar mol for mole(s). (Some authors use M to stand for molarity as well as molar. They may use italics for one and not the other. Check your text and follow its convention.)... [Pg.163]

Figure 14.10 illustrates the method of seismic prospecting on land by what is known as reflection shooting. A hole usually 10 to 12 cm in diameter is drilled to a depth of 15 to 30 m. The charge of explosive is likely to be 5 to 12-5 kg and the stemming used is usually water. As the explosive must fire under a depth of water which may exceed 45 m, special varieties of gelatines are employed (see p. 53). Alternatively, a powder explosive can be sealed into pressure-resistant metal containers. Special detonators are also employed, not only to withstand the possible head of water, but also to have a specially short bursting time (see p. 113). [Pg.149]

The elements yield tetravalent derivatives m special circumstances, iu which they function as the basic elements. In the case of oxygen they are termed oxonium salts sulphur yields sulphonium salts whilst selenium and tellurium offer an even wider range of derivatives. Thus, the following types of compounds are now well known ... [Pg.9]

The addition of diazo compounds generally leads to three membered rings, although m special cases, linear adducts with an intact diazo group [110] or l,3,4-oxadiazol-3-ines [111] can be isolated Most diazo compounds are unstable and yield oxirans and aziridines [772,113,114] Aziridines are obtained exclusively on reaction of certain polyfluorinated acyl imines with diazomethane [775]... [Pg.853]

Using modem isothermal calorimeters, experiments with a reproducibility better than 20 mj can be achieved. This is therefore the value one has to compare with the expected immenion energy in order to predict the feasibiHty of an experiment and to estimate the sample mass to be used. The immersion energies range between a few mj/m (water/Teflon) and a few hundred mj/m (specially carbons in organic solvents, but also inorganic oxides in water). Up to a few hundred miUigrams of sample can be introduced in the bulb. [Pg.278]

The accuracy of all methods, over time intervals from several seconds to hours, is usually 0.1 mN/m. Special instruments enable measurements in the millisecond time scale. Such studies are performed with less accuracy, sometimes of the order of 1.0 mN/m. [Pg.140]
