STB, fire, or DS2. Decontaminate liquid agent on the skin with the M258A1, M258, or M291 skin decontaminating kit. Decontaminate individual equipment with the M280 individual equipment decontamination kit. 

Decontamination Complete cleansing of the skin with soap and water at the earliest opportunity. If washing is impossible, use the M258A1, M258, or M291 skin decontamination kit. Symptoms may appear as late as 36 h after contact exposure, even if the skin is washed within an hour. In fact, a delay in onset of several hours is typical. Use this time to prepare for the possibility of a widespread outbreak 6-24 h after the attack. Decontaminate bulk quantities of BZ with caustic alcohol solutions. If BZ or other belladonnoids are used as free bases, decontamination will require a solvent, such as 25% ethanol, 0.1 N hydrochloric acid, or 5% acetic acid. 

Flush eyes with water immediately. Use, the M258A1, M258, or M291 skin decontamination kit for liquid agent on the skin. Decontaminate individual equipment with the M280 individual equipment decontamination kit. Calcium hypochlorite (HTH), supertropical bleach (STB), household bleach, caustic soda, dilute alkali solutions, or decontaminating solution number 2 (DS2) are effective on equipment. Use steam and ammonia or hot, soapy water in a confined area. 

M291 Skin Decontamination Kit This kit is used to decontaminate the soldier s hands, face, ears, and neck. Packets in the kit consist of a foil-laminated fiber material containing a reactive resin. It replaces the M258A1 Skin Decontamination Kit. 

Absorb contaminating agent with absorbent materials (e.g., rub with flour followed by wet tissues or use military M291 resin kits for spot decontamination of skin only). 

Decontamination and Treatment Administer oxygen and remove the animal from the toxic environment. For ocular exposures, flush eyes with copious amounts of tepid 0.9% saline or water for at least 15 min. Wash all animals three times with either soap and water, dilute bleach solution (1 10 with water), ethanol, or a tincture of green soap (Cancio, 1993). Towelettes impregnated with alkaline chloramine and phenol are used by the mihtary (M291 Skin Decontaminating Kit, Rohm and Haas). 

Though an ideal decontaminant may be difficult to attain, many alternatives exist that are readily available and meet many basic requirements, van Hooidonk et al. (1983) evaluated a variety of household products as decontaminants for VX, soman, and sulfur mustard. His paper provides an excellent comparison of these readily available decontaminants to include flour, soapy water, talcum powder, and tissue paper. We have selected several other candidate decontaminants that are under investigation, in advanced development, or currently fielded. These include the currently fielded U.S. Department of Defense skin decontaminants (M291 Skin Decontamination Kit [SDK], 0.5% hypochlorite, and 1% soapy water). Reactive Skin Decontaminant Lotion (RSDL), Diphoterine, Sandia Laboratory s Decontamination Foam, and the Decontamination Sponge. 

Prior to securing the tube with tape or a tube holder, be sure that this area of the skin has been decontaminated. An M291 dry decontamination kit is excellent for this purpose, as its dry, black decontamination material will dramatically show what skin area has been decontaminated.
