Lymphocytic colitis

This is the first reported case of enterocolic lymphocytic phlebitis, a rare form of vasculitis, in conjunction with lymphocytic colitis, lymphocytic enteritis, and lymphocytic appendicitis. The fact that the patient was taking flutamide at the same time suggests that this peculiar form of lymphocytic inflammation of the veins and mucosa could represent a drug reaction. It should be recalled that diarrhea is a common complication of flutamide use, and perhaps occurs in severe degree in some 15% of men taking full-dose treatment.

Lymphocytic colitis activated by acarbose has been reported (53).

This condition presents with diarrhoea the colonic mucosa is macroscopically normal but histologically shows either lymphocytic infiltration of the mucosa (lymphocytic colitis) or subendothelial fibrosis (collagenous colitis). Treatment with aminosalicylate induces remission in about 50% and corticosteroid may also be needed. 

Nausea, vomiting, and gastric intolerance are relatively uncommon and mild. However, there have been reports of severe diarrhea requiring drug withdrawal. Eosinophilic colitis (47) and lymphocytic colitis (SEDA-22, 85) are rare reactions. 

Lymphocytic colitis has been attributed to carbamazepine in a 77-year-old man, who had taken it for 6 months (49). 

In a few reports, lymphocytic colitis has been attributed to ticlopidine in some cases the pathological features in the colon biopsy resolved after withdrawal of the drug (24-26).

Gastrointestinal In one case Daflon was associated with chronic diarrhea and lymphocytic colitis [30 ]. 

Gastrointestinal Persistent diarrhea and weight loss occurred during therapy with leflunomide, with histological evidence of lymphocytic colitis-, leflunomide was withdrawn, the diarrhea settled, and histologically there was no colitis 3 months later [42 ].

Release of larger amounts of macrophage inhibitory factor (MIF) by homogeneous suspensions of DCs isolated from patients with colitis ulcerosa, due to the effect of Thl lymphocyte cytokines, in comparison with healthy human DC. It was observed that in an in vitro test MIF blocks the flow of mononuclear cells and granulocytes, while in in vivo it is released not only by lymphocytes but also by dendritic cells and leads to cell accumulation— occurrence of inflammatory infiltration. Disease development is also the result of the effect of TNFa, IL 1, IL 6, IL 8, and other cytokines released by macrophages and lymphocytes (Murakami et al., 2002). Thus, it has been proved that DCs can release MIF.

Acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis occurred in a 28-year-old man with ulcerative colitis taking sulfasalazine (92). A patch test was negative, but the lymphocyte stimulation assay for sulfasalazine showed a stimulation index of 541% (controls were not mentioned).
