Lubricant application steps

Several steps can be taken to maximize the run time for the reciprocating compressor. Since wear is a function of rubbing speed, the piston speed can be kept to a minimum. Chapter 3 made recommendations for piston speed. Reliability problems due to valves are reputed to account tor 40% of the maintenance cost of the compressor. Valves are the single largest cause for unplanned shutdowns. Basically, valve life can he increased by keeping the speed of the compressor as low as practical. At 360 rpm, the valves are operated six times a second. At 1,200 rpm, ihc valves operate 20 times a second or 1,728,000 times in a day. It is not difficult to understand why the valves are considered critical. To keep the reliability in mind, valve type, material selection and application considerations such as volume ratio, gas corrosiveness, and gas cleanliness need attention by the experts. One final note is that while lubrication is an asset to the rubbing parts, it is not necessarily good for valve reliability. [Pg.475]

Wetting is an absolute condition for detergency. However, wetting plays an important role in other applications as well. A special case is the penetration of fluids in porous material. That may be a bundle of fibers in the dying process or the stone matrix in enhanced oil recovery. One of the steps of lubrication is wetting of surfaces by lubricant liquids. Because other conditions must also be considered, the use of phosphorus-containing surfactants is beneficial. [Pg.598]

Emulsifiers are used in many technical applications. Emulsions of the oil-in-water and the water-in-oil type are produced on a large scale in the cosmetic industry. Applications Over the last 20 years, ICP-AES has become a widely used elemental analysis tool in many laboratories, which is also used to identify/quantify emulsifiers, contaminants, catalyst residues and other inorganic additives. Fatty acid ethoxylates are used extensively in the textile industry as emulsifiers for processing oils, antistatic agents (qv), softeners, and fiber lubricants, and as detergents in scouring operations. They also find application as emulsifiers in cosmetic preparations and pesticide formulations. Fatty acid ethoxylates are manufactured either by alkali-catalyzed reaction of fatty acids with ethylene oxide or by acid-catalyzed esterification of fatty acids with preformed poly(ethylene glycol). Naphthenics are made from a more limited range of crude oils than paraffinics, and in smaller quantities, at a restricted number of refineries. Important characteristics of naphthenic base oils are their naturally low pour points, because they are wax-free, and excellent solvency powers. Their viscosity/temperature characteristics are inferior to paraffinics, i.e. they have low/medium VI, but they are used in a wide range of applications where this is not a problem. Since naphthenic crudes are free of wax, no de-waxing step is needed but solvent extraction or hydrotreatment is often used now to reduce aromatic content and especially to remove polycyclic aromatics which may present a health hazard in untreated oils. The main producers of naphthenics are in North and South America because most of the world s supply of naphthenic lubricant crudes are found there. [Pg.15]
