The mission of logistics today is to ensure that it is the right product - to meet exact end-customer needs - that gets delivered in the right place at the right time. We decided to develop this chapter for the third edition from scratch, and to take a fresh look at logistics today and where it is going. In our view there are four areas that will be particularly fmitful to pursue - and where a lot of progress can be made. These form the key issues of the chapter. 

Finally, its international perspective reflects the nature of logistics today in businesses like Reckitt Benckiser. As another Anglo-Dutch collaboration, Alan and Remko have succeeded in helping to increase our understanding of a rapidly evolving and increasingly crucial area of doing business in the twenty-first century. 

Assuming we were to undertake the development of another operation the size of Prudhoe Bay with similar logistical problems, one of the first considerations would be, could not the SCADA and DCS functions be combined into s single system We believe today the answer to this is yes. In 1979/80, when our current systems were being configured, this was not possible. No proven DCS system had been, operated with a microwave link in its data highway. 

Another problem that needs a good solution is the logistics of collection of non-industrial polymeric waste materials. Many collections in practise today contribute to more traffic and also to collection sites that are overfull and attract rats and birds etc. Quick and badly thought out collections lead to a negative impression of recycling and less willingness to accept it as a solution for the future. 

Shooting 33,771 or even far more people within two days and then removing all traces of the deed (which is impossible anyhow, with the investigative means available today ) would require superb organization and logistics. Some aspects thereof were discussed in the context of specific issues, and for reasons of space constraints we shall have to leave it at that. 

Business is business, and some is good business. Potentially and ultimately, all good things are possible for humankind, but all of the sick of the world today are separated from redemption either by space or by time. Today, the sick of nonindustrial, poor, or emerging nations could benefit from technologies and products available in more industrial nations, but logistics, ignorance,...

Typical applications are forklift trucks, automatically guided vehicles (AGVs) in modern production and logistics, and on-road electric vehicles (EVs).
