The American Chemistry Council PSS was chaired by Peter Lodal (Eastman Chemical) and included representatives from DuPont Shell Chemical ExxonMobil Chemical Huntsman Dow Chemical Solutia Celanese Rohm 8i Haas Company Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. Monsanto Union Carbide Montell Eastman Chemical and Lyondell. 

In like manner lodal (VI), on condensation with 6-nitro-3 4-methylene-dioxyphthalide (IV) yields nitro-a -adlumine (I R = NOj . O. CHa. O. at C and C replaced by 20Me), which crystallises from chloroform-methyl alcohol in orange, rectangular plates, m.p. 180-1° dec.), and on reduction yields the corresponding amino-derivative, bundles of minute needles, m.p. 218-9°.

These alkaloids, CaiHaiOeN, are isomeric with hydrastine and have been shown to be stereoisomeric but not optical antipodes. Owing to the presence of two asymmetric centers in the molecule, four optically active forms are possible. Two of these are the naturally occurring d- and Z-adlumines and the third is corlumine. That they all have the structure V (R = Me) was shown by the observation that they all yield l-hydroxy-2-methyl-5,6-dimethoxytetrahydroisoquinoline (XXXIV) (60) (lodal) and 2-carboxy-... 

The nitro a -base, m.p. 180-181°, was obtainable by condensing lodal (XXXIV) with the nitrophthahde XLVIII and its reduction to the corresponding amino derivative, m.p. 218-219°, was reported (86). The nitro compound is unusually phototropic, its pale orange color changing to a dark red on exposure to light for two hours.
