If the OCFE solution procedure is to be used regularly for system analysis, a careful study of the problem of locating elements is necessary. Finlayson (1980) gives a basis for this study in a cursory examination of variable grid spacing and elements sizes, or adaptive meshes as he calls them. The simplest procedure is based on physical information about the solution profile such as in the present case the point where CO is depleted within the reactor bed.

The periodic table of elements is an arrangement of the elements in rows and columns so that it is easy to locate elements with similar properties. The elements of the modern periodic table are arranged in numerical order by atomic number.

As you become familiar with the periodic table, you will be able to quickly locate elements on it. For now, it might be easier to find them in the alphabetical listing on the inside back cover of this book, but you should also find their position in the periodic table. 

The value of the periodic table cannot be overstated. You may use it at first to learn the system of naming chemical compounds after that, it will help you in many other ways. For example, you will need atomic masses to solve some of the problems in this course. The periodic table is a readily available source of these values. Other applications of the periodic table wiU appear as the course progresses. Be sure to locate elements in the periodic table while learning name-symbol pairs.

One of the more tmusual characteristics common to different parts of Cuenof s Tree of Life is the presence of sessile animals (therefore benthic ), and this aspect of the animal world is specific to the marine environment (Cuenot, 1940,1952). Because animals are heterotrophic, those that are attached for life to their supporting structure must necessarily find their food in the water that sur-roimds them.
