Localization transfer

Thus, Experiment 7 involved the same oxidation-reduction reaction but the electron transfer must have occurred locally between individual copper atoms (in the metal) and individual silver ions (in the solution near the metal surface). This local transfer replaces the wire middleman in the cell, which carries electrons from one beaker (where they are released by copper) to the other (where they are accepted by silver ions). [Pg.203]

One well-analysed chemosignal system is that of the Red-bellied Newt (Cynops pyrrhogaster). Males of this species produce from the abdominal gland a semiochemical protein (sodefrin) with marked VNO activity as a female attractant (Kikuyama et al., 1997). Courtship displays of newts often contain tail-waving bouts, which direct cloacal or other secretions from the male toward female recipients (Fig. 3.1). A large stable molecule like sodefrin, alone or as part of a VNPr complex, is presumably suitable for such local transference. [Pg.152]

How does this NBO description of A—F bonding compare with the classical valence-bond (VB) picture 14 Although it is evident that the NBO Lewis-structure description is very VB-like in its emphasis on localized, transferable electron-pair bonds and lone pairs of the chemist s Lewis diagram, there are important differences in mathematical detail. [Pg.102]

The ratio of the diffusivity to Ae film-thickness is the mass transfer coefficient, kc. The tildas in the terms kc and 6 denote that they are, respectively, the local transfer coefficient and the boimdary layer thickness at a particular point P on the sphere,... [Pg.700]

In this case, there can be no local equilibrium unless the whole system is in equilibrium. The sorption process will then consist of two stages A rapid diffusion of sorbate particles occupying sites of type 1 will be followed by a subsequent establishment of equilibriun between sites of type 1 and sites of type 2. In the simplest case, a rapid diffusion is followed by a slow first order process. During the second stage, the local transfer of sorbate from sites of type 1 to sites of type 2—not the diffusion—will be rate controlling. [Pg.307]

As an incompressible fluid of infinite extent approaches and flows past either a spherical solid pellet or a gas bubble, a mobile component undergoes inteiphase mass transfer via convection and diffusion from the sphere to the fluid phase. The overall objective is to calculate the mass transfer coefficient and the Sherwood number at any point along the interface (i.e., the local transfer coefficients), as well as surface-averaged transfer coefficients. The results are applicable in the laminar flow regime (1) when the sphere is stationary and the fluid moves,... [Pg.275]

With Scandinavian stacking practice, the end zones of the stack dry faster than the central, fully filled part (Salin and Ohman, 1998). The lower air velocity in the ends is more than compensated by higher heat-transfer coefficients associated with the flow disturbance and smaller wood volume. (There is a smaller decrease in temperature and increase in humidity along the stack in the airflow direction.) In general, it is expected that the local transfer coefficients diminish with distance in the airflow direction due to a thickening of the boundary layer. This variation and the downwind accumulation of moisture in the airstream result in the maximum possible evaporation rate dwindling with distance from the air inlet to the air outlet from the stack. [Pg.835]

Dip-pen lithography, SAM, hot embossing, nanoimprint lithography, electron beam lithography, dry etching, and reactive ion etching are techniques that can be used to prepare nanostructures with 50-70 nm dimensions. Nanomechanical techniques include processes that involve local transfer of material from a tool onto a substrate when either the tool or the substrate is prestructured. [Pg.152]

Note that the number of local transfer units is the same on the whole of the active surface of the plate if, though, we can accept that Kq does not... [Pg.70]

Thus, when a fluid flows over a crest which divides that fluid to form two films, the local transfer coefficient (or heat or material) is considerable (if not infinite) along the edge. On the other hand, the surface involved is small, except when the packing is entirely composed of wires or vertical plates not in contact with each other, along which the hquid flows. [Pg.99]
