There are plastics such as TP elastomers that are frequently subjected to dynamic loads where heat energy and motion control systems are required. One of the serious dynamic loading problems frequently encountered in machines and vehicles is vibration-induced deflection (Chapter 4, DYNAMIC LOAD ISOLATOR). [Pg.100]

Tests such as the tensile strength and tear strength tests evaluate polyurethanes to destruction. When polyurethanes are used in a practical situation, the aim is for them to have as long a life as needed in the application. Even though elastomers are used as both dampers and isolators, the function of an isolator is not to provide any significant damping, but to isolate the transmission of dynamic loads. Isolators can function simply as a recipient and translator of kinetic to potential energy or to change the system natural frequency and transfer function. [Pg.320]

In the load position the sampling loop is isolated from the mobile phase and is open to the atmosphere. A syringe with a capacity several times that of the sampling loop is used to place the sample in the loop. Any extra sample beyond that needed to fill the sample loop exits through the waste line. Power Supplies and Controls. Induction heating furnace loads rarely can be connected directiy to the user s electric power distribution system. If the load is to operate at the supply frequency, a transformer is used to provide the proper load voltage as weU as isolation from the supply system. Adjustment of the load voltage can be achieved by means of a tapped transformer or by use of a solid-state switch. Damping reduces the transmissibihty at the natural frequency, but increases the transmissibihty at higher frequencies. Products. Vibration isolators typically are selected to have a static deflection, under load, that yields a natural frequency no more than one-third the lowest driving frequency that must be isolated (see Eig. 7). The supporting stmcture must have sufficient stiffness so it does not deflect under the load of the supported equipment by more than one-tenth the deflection of the isolator itself (6). In addition to static deflection requirements, vibration isolators are selected for a particular appHcation according to their abiHty to carry an imposed load, and to withstand the environment in which they are used (extreme temperatures, chemical exposure, etc). [Pg.319]

Some power tubes can be operated without the need for a protective ferrite isolator. One example is the cooker magnetron (700 W) used in modern microwave ovens (57). At higher power levels, such as 25 kW, it is more common to employ a protective ferrite device, particularly in the form of a circulator (58), as shown in Figure 3. This results in a power loss equivalent to a few percentage points in system efficiency. The ferrite circulator prevents reflected power from returning to the power tube and instead directs it into an auxiHary dummy load. The pulling of tube frequency is thus minimised. [Pg.342]
