Proof pressure

Before first use hoses to be inspected visually internally and externally and tested at proof pressure. Repeat at least annually and include check on electrical resistance. The resistance of the complete assembly should be not more than 15 ohms, unless the hose is intended to be non-conducting when resistance should be at least 25 000 ohms. The proof pressure method is permitted where DOT or TC regulations do not require the determination of total and permanent volumetric expansion of the cylinder. In process plant, it had become normal practice to subject new, large pressure vessels to hydraulic proof pressure tests. The distinction between hydraulic and pneumatic pressure tests is an important one. Water is essentially incompressible - its volume barely changes when it is pressurized. Gas (or steam) is, however, highly compressible. Hence, in a hydraulic pressure test, the pressure vessel is filled with water, and if any failure should occur, as soon as the enclosed volume begins to increase because of the developing failure, the pressure immediately collapses. This means there is no explosion - just a bang as the metal fails, followed by a flood of water. By contrast, if a pressure vessel fails when pressurized with gas or steam, as in the boiler explosions described above, the energy of the compressed gas/steam drives the failure to create a violent explosion, and pieces of the failed pressure vessel become missiles. [Pg.110]

Rarely does composite testing include actual mechanical verification of the final product. The exceptions are filament-wound pressure vessels and some small composite structures, such as golf shafts, that are tested in bending. Many pressure vessels experience some deterioration due to the proof pressure test, which causes transverse stress in the hoop plies that ends up fracturing the matrix in the outer plies and results in a first-ply failure. This is one reason why another failure criterion is invoked for pressure vessels, namely the last-ply failure criterion. However, the failure in the outermost plies reduces the composite s resistance to water intrusion, and consequently the product may have to be recoated with a moisture-resistant paint to satisfy some environmental fears. [Pg.316]
