USE In photographic developers in alkaline storage bet-teries in prepn of other lithium salts where use of carbonate is not practical as catalyst in the production of alkyd resins, in esterifications in the production of lithium soaps, greases, sulfonates. Caution Strongly alkaline and hence caustic. Very irritating to skin. Systemic loxicity similar to other lithium compds. See Lithium. 

Lithium soap greases with added M0S2 are generally superior to the base lithium greases in wear reduction, lubrication, and mst prevention. In systems where the lithium soap acts as an EP lubricant, the M0S2 has little effect on the grease. The amounts of M0S2 added vary fi-om 0.25% to up to 25%.

Greases may contain soaps of lithium, calcium, sodium, aluminium, etc., or they may be non-soap greases. 

Lithium compounds are used in ceramics, lubricants, and medicine. Small daily doses of lithium carbonate are an effective treatment for bipolar (manic-depressive) disorder but scientists still do not fully understand why. Lithium soaps—the lithium salts of long-chain carboxylic acids—are used as thickeners in lubricating greases for high-temperature applications because they have higher melting points than more conventional sodium and potassium soaps. 

Lithium hydroxide monohydrate. CAS l3IO-65-2. LiOH H 0 loses water at I0LC. LiOH nidus at 450 C. The compound is soluble in water. The compound is used in the formulation of lithium soaps used in multipurpose greases also in the manufacture of various lithium salts and as an additive lo the electrolyte of alkaline storage bailerics. LiOH also is an efficient, light-weight absorbent for carbon dioxide. 

Lithium hydroxide monohydrate is industrially important in the manufacture of greases e.g. on the basis of lithium stearate. In the USA more than 60% of all greases are produced with the help of lithium soaps (ca. 25% of total lithium consumption). 

Silicone oils can be converted into pastes by incorporating large quantities of highly dispersed silicas or calcium or lithium soaps. These products are utilized as sealants and specialty greases. 

Lithium soaps, which have higher melting points than sodium and potassium soaps, are used as thickeners in lubricating greases for high-temperature applications. 

Use Storage battery electrolyte, carbon dioxide absorbent in space vehicles, lubricating greases, ceramics, catalyst, photographic developers, lithium soaps.
