Coin-type nonaqueous rechargeable batteries are used in the field of backup power source for electroiuc devices, because of their advantages, such as high energy density and Ught weight. In the case of a battery based on lithium, lithium has to be pressure-welded or electrochemically deposited to the negative electrode. 

The advantage of the battery is that lithium has the most negative standard reduction potential valne (see Table 13.1). Furthermore, lithium is the lightest metal, so that only 6.941 g of Li (its molar mass) is needed to produce 1 mole of electrons. A lithium-ion battery can be recharged literally hundreds of times without deterioration. These desirable characteristics make it suitable for use in cellular telephones, digital cameras, and laptop computers. 

Other lithium rechargeable concepts are being actively developed, and prominent amongst them includes a battery being developed by Moli since 1976, where advantage is taken of lithium intercalation in materials such as molybdenum disulphide. The Moli cells (especially AA) are now (1988) available in a limited way and full production is promised for 1989.
