List of prohibited substances

The WADA list of prohibited substances and methods is covering the following items on January 1, 2004. 

In practice, when each sample enters the laboratory, it shall be first classified into in- or out-of competition testing, but, for simplification reasons, the same screening procedures are applied to all of them. The interpretation of the results is adapted accordingly when the analyses are finished. Consequently, the existence of the official list of prohibited substances means that urine or sometimes blood samples... 

Drug abuse Since IGF-I mediates many of the anabolic actions of growth hormone, it is on the World Anti-Doping Agency list of prohibited substances [25 ]. 

Based on the assumption that caffeine may enhance athletic performance, the International Olympic Committee defined an upper concentration limit of 12 pg/ml in urine samples, above which an athlete was disqualified. However, in the World Anti-Doping Agency Executive Committee Meeting (September 2003), it was observed that the stimulant effect of caffeine is obtained at levels lower than 12. As a consequence, caffeine was removed from the 2004 list of prohibited substances because athletes must be allowed to behave like other people in society and may thus be allowed to drink coffee.

The elevated diuresis, as induced by different mechanisms by diuretic agents, has been employed to counteract hypertension and selected kidney diseases for several decades. Due to the capability of diuretics to mask other banned compounds by urine dilution rather than any performance-enhancing property, these drugs were added to the list of prohibited substances and methods of doping in 1988. Early attempts to detect the misuse of diuretics in sports were based on GC-MS, and particularly methylated analytes were subjected to El dissociation studies.

The adverse health effects of plastics containing phthalates has prompted the EU to ban DBP, BBP, DEHP, DOP, DINP, and DIDP in baby toys that may be introduced into the mouths of children under three years.In addition, several proposals for the prohibition of DEHP use in medical materials have been made. In 1998, the Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Northeast Atlantic established the objective of eliminating the emissions and release of all hazardous substances into the environment by 2020, including DBP and DEHP in the list of chemicals for priority action. The EU has also included DEHP in the list of 33 substances of... 

Laboratories should also be aware of regulatory provisions relating to stratospheric-ozone-depleting substances. The list of such substances can be found at 40 CFR 82, Appendixes A and B to Subpart A. The list includes as "Class I" substances most common freons, carbon tetrachloride, and methyl chloroform. The regulations prohibit the movement in interstate commerce of these substances and other listed ozone-depleting substances. 

An amended Commission proposal makes provision for the list of hazardous substances to be revised by 2003, with the possibiUty of extending the complete ban to additional substances. When scientific evidence is available, the European Parliament and the Council will decide on whether to prohibit other hazardous substances and require their substitution with more environmentally friendly alternative substances that ensure at least the same level of protection. ...

On the farm, a crop can be labeled as organic if it is produced on land where no prohibited substances have been applied for a minimum of three years prior to harvest. Animal products labeled as organic must come from livestock that have been fed organic feed, raised using humane animal husbandry systems, and that have not be treated with synthetic medications, except under very limited conditions set forth in the national list. 

The Food Additives Amendment was added in 1958, requiring manufacturers of new food additives to establish safety. The Delaney proviso prohibited the approval of any food additive shown to induce cancer in humans or animals, and the FDA published the first list of substances, including herbs and spices, as Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) in the Federal Register. The list contained nearly 200 substances. This list is now compiled under Title 21 of the Code of Federal Regulations. 

Annex IV will list substances for which no safe levels can be fixed. The use of these substances will be prohibited throughout the community. 

The 8th Schedule was substituted by a new one, mentioning prohibited substances in Table 7.4 11 and limited substances in Table 7.4 I. The long list copied from the US regulation has been deleted. The 8th Schedule allows the addition of preservatives to essences and flavouring emulsions ...
