Lime neutralization

Through the late 1980s, spent pickle liquor was traditionally land disposed by steel manufacturers after lime neutralization. The lime neutralization process raises the pH of the spent acid and makes heavy metals in the sludge less likely to leach into the environment. Today, however, some of the spent pickle liquor can be recycled or regenerated on-site by steel manufacturers.5... 

Farmers use lime (calcium hydroxide) to sweeten" an acid soil, and make heavy, clay-laden soils more workable. Carbon dioxide in the air dissolves in water to form the very weak carbonic acid (hydrogen carbonate). The alkaline lime neutralizes any traces of carbonic acid in the earth, producing calcium carbonate (or chalk) - and some more water. 

The reaction with calcium hydroxide is rather slow, so agitation should go on for some time (5-15 min). The mixture is then allowed to remain at rest for clarification. Treatment with milk of lime neutralized the acids and caused the precipitation of several coloured compounds, among others the products of the reaction of trinitrotoluene with calcium hydroxide. The amount of calcium oxide consumed in the process is 700 tons monthly, at an output of 4000 tons of TNT a month. 

Sludge Disposal. Waste sludges are generated from several areas in oilseeds wastewater treatment, including lime neutralization and dissolved air flotation phase separators, and biological waste.

The crude lime neutralized syrup resulting from oat and peanut hulls hydrolysis with sulphuric acid for 2 hours at 15 lbs. steam pressure was fermented by Bacillus acetoethylicum by Fred, Peterson, and Anderson. They report that better yields are obtained from oat hulls than from peanut hulls.
