Lightning arrestors

A high temperature thermocouple uses sihcon carbide (146). It is also used in lightning arrestors to protect high tension power lines, and in high loss factor microwave attenuators (147).

Climate and natural litizards should be evaluated. Lightning arrestors should be installed to prevent lighuiing from directly striking flammable areas. For outdoor operations, temperatures must be considered. 

Drainage water from copper affects zinc in a similar way. Zinc sheets must never be fixed with copper nails, nor should copper roofs drain into zinc or galvanised gutters. Copper lightning arrestors provide further potential hazards to zinc work when a copper lightning strip has to pass over or near a zinc roof, it should be either well insulated or heavily tinned. 

Neon is also used in scintillation counters, neutron fission counters, proportional counters, and ionization chambers for detection of charged particles. Its mixtures with bromine vapors or chlorine are used in Geiger tubes for counting nuclear particles. Helium-neon mixture is used in gas lasers. Some other applications of neon are in antifog devices, electrical current detectors, and lightning arrestors. The gas is also used in welding and preparative reactions. In preparative reactions it provides an inert atmosphere to shield the reaction from air contact.

Climate and natural hazards. Lightning arrestors should be installed to reduce/eliminate ignition sources in flammable areas. Storm drainage systems should be maintained. 

Transformer rectifiers must be adequately protected from the elements. If they are sited outside they are usually in steel enclosures (suitably corrosion protected ) with adequate ventilation and protection against vandalism or other damage. They often incorporate lightning arrestors and other protection for the public and the inspector of the system, with suitable fusing and earth protection. 

Enclosure, lightning arrestors, individual earth connections for each storage tank and firefighting equipment are important safety considerations.

Silicon carbide is manufactured in many complex bonded shapes, which are utilized for super-refractory purposes such as setter tile and kiln furniture, muffles, retorts and condensers, skid rails, hot cyclone liners, rocket nozzles and combustion chambers, and mechanical shaft seals. It is also used for erosion- and corrosion-resistant uses, such as check valves, orifices, slag blocks, aluminum die-casting machine parts and sludge burner orifices. Electrical uses of SiC include lightning arrestors, heating elements and nonlinear resistors.
