Side effects of physical exercise include enhanced libido, better sleep, decreased body fat, improved muscle tone, greater life expectancy, increased strength and endurance and improved cholesterol levels. So if both antidepressants and exercise work by means of the placebo effect, which placebo would you prefer ...

Based on results from Cremieux et al. (2005), the Canadian pharmaceutical spending model predicts that actual increases in pharmaceutical spending from their 1981 levels accounted for life expectancy increases reaching 21.8 months for males and 14.3 months for females by 1998. The model predicts that 56% of total life expectancy gain for Canadian men from 1981 to 1998 is attributable to pharmaceutical product utilization (Table 12.4). At 63% of total life expectancy gain, the pharmaceutical contribution is even larger for women than for men. 

Dietary choices, sedentary occupations and lack of exercise are responsible for obesity and associated conditions including cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. Smoking, excessive alcohol intake and improper drug use curtail both life and its quality. As life expectancy increases it is mirrored by the increase in degenerative diseases such as arthritis, osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, cancer, hearing and eyesight decline, and brain cell deterioration (Alzheimer s). 

Life expectancy increases and quality of life - in the sense of being disability-free - in later years is constantly improving (Hakamies-Blomqvist et aLy 2004). 

Since most time-dependent failures have larger life dispersions, we must consider the maximum and minimum ratios of 4 1 and 40 1. Even under these conditions we can state that in highly developed countries HAART is cost-effective. Because of an increase of life expectancy, the life-time provider costs increase under this drug regime. But, on the contrary, the indirect... 

A final assessment is difficult as the number of studies on lifetime costs of HIV/AIDS is very small, and the last few years have seen only few publications in that field.
