HOCl-mediated protein oxidation accelerates under pathophysiological conditions. Thus, proteins from extracellular matrix obtained from advanced human atherosclerotic lesions contained the enhanced levels of oxidized amino acids (DOPA and dityrosine) compared to healthy arterial tissue [44], It was also found that superoxide enhanced the prooxidant effect of hypochlorite in protein oxidation supposedly by the decomposition of chloramines and chlor-amides forming nitrogen-centered free radicals and increasing protein fragmentation [45], In addition to chlorination, hypochlorite is able to oxidize proteins. The most readily oxidized amino acid residue of protein is methionine. Methionine is reversibly oxidized by many oxidants including hypochlorite to methionine sulfide and irreversibly to methionine sulfone [46] ... [Pg.827]

From carious enamel, a brown pigment-producing Actinomyces has been isolated (Hurst et al., 1948). Black caries lesions contained higher numbers of Actinomyces, Lactobacillus, and Veilonella (but not black pigmented Prevotella) than unstained lesions (Boue et al., 1987). [Pg.36]

In a parallel preliminary experiment, hypochlorite instead of colla-genase was employed for matrix degradation. After hypochlorite treatment, tubules in sound dentin beneath the lesions contained material positive for PAS- and Richardson s stains, which was not observed after the buffer- and collagenase treatments. The bacterial degradation of the organic matrix was, therefore, simulated enzymatically. [Pg.95]

Sodium nitroprusside 40-100ng in three minutes Preferred agent in the cases of no reflow/slow reflow. Always selective infusion (or better subselective infusion via intracoronary catheter) Strict BP monitoring reguired during administration Needs to be available for the cases of degenerate SVG or lesions containing thrombus... [Pg.532]

Immediately following vaccination, the vaccinia virus begins to replicate in the skin. After 3 or 4 days, a red papule appears at the site. Two days later, the papule becomes vesicular, surrounded by erythema. After another 2 days, approximately 7 days after vaccination, the papule becomes a typical Jennerian pustule, a whitish, umbilicated, multilocular lesion containing turbid lymph, surrounded by erythema. The pustule may continue to expand for three additional days (26) (Fig. 2.7 see color plate 2.7). [Pg.55]

Endometriosis-associated pain is secondary to structural and/or inflammatory causes. The lesions may cause pain by compression of nerve fibers. Increased pressure within endometriomas (cysts within the ovary) has been linked to dyspareunia. Endometrial lesions also generate local inflammation with prostaglandin release and increase the risk of developing adhesions. Endometrial lesions contain estrogen and progesterone receptors, and symptoms may correlate with the cyclic release of hormones during the menstrual cycle. [Pg.1486]

Additionally, patients with lesions composed of purely classic CNV had a better visual acuity outcome at 12 weeks (+0.6 line) than those with lesions containing some occult component (—0.8 line). Some of these early findings were later corroborated in the Phase III clinical trials with two-year follow-up and placebo-controlled, randomized design. [Pg.232]

Interestingly, foam cells in advanced atherosclerotic lesions accumulate large amounts of unesterified cholesterol [9,17], some of which is in crystalline form and may be deposited in the extracellular space when foam cells die (Fig. 3). For example, while 2 of 13 abdominal aortic and femoral artery fatty streak lesions contained cholesterol crystals, all of 24 advanced lesions had these structures [17]. The mechanism of unesterified cholesterol accumulation is not known, but could involve either defects in cholesterol trafficking to... [Pg.585]

Fatty acids may have direct effects on atherogenesis and are also the precursors of specific bioactive lipids that may have important roles in lesion development. Lesions contain up to... [Pg.593]

Glaucoma is a type of optic neuropathy associated with characteristic optic disk damage, which may result in certain visual field loss patterns, at least partly in response to suboptimal intraocular pressure. There are three representative ocular lesions containing glycosaminoglycans, namely the aqueous humor, trabecular meshwork, and optic nerve head/lamina cribrosa, which are involved in glaucoma. [Pg.184]
