LDPE (maximum 2000 ppm). Figure 10.14 shows the influence of vacuum and the use of stripping agents on the degassing rate, assuming a content of 5300 ppm of total volatile components and/or 1500 ppm VA intake content. [Pg.196]

Polymer embrittlement was determined by 180° fold and/or pencil puncture tests. Elongation in the transverse direction of the LDPE samples was measured on an Instron TT-C tensile tester at 70°F and 65 relative humidity. The time to break was 25-50 sec. for 2 mm strips utilizing a gauge length of 0.5" and jaw-type clamps. [Pg.312]

Soft aluminium foil has a fairly low tensile and tear strength, so it is essential that very thin gauges are supported by paper or film. In general, foil of 0.025 mm and below has to be supported. For example, 0.025 mm foil laminated to 30 g/m2 LDPE is a widely used strip packaging laminate. In theory, 0.015 mm foil laminated to 30 g/m2 LDPE would be a more economical proposition. However, at this caliper any undue stretch would be likely to perforate and tear the foil. Hence it is possible to reduce the foil caliper only if support is increased, i.e. by the addition of a paper ply. Thus if cost savings are to be made the final laminate would probably be either... [Pg.273]

Low density polyethylene film (LDPE) (5-1 x 10 mm thick) obtained from Dow Chemical Co., Surlyn S-1601 (sodium tjjpe 5-1 x 10 mm thick) and Surlyn S-1625 (zinc type 7.6 x 10 mm thick) obtained from DuPont. The samples were cut into strips, 2.5 cm x 12.7 cm, and immersed into juice (7 samples per 250 ml bottle) which had been filled into amber glass bottles and closed with a screw cap. [Pg.298]

The ratio of film agea to volume for a 250 ml pack (area/volume) was 0.9 cm/ cm. Film strips were also heat sealed together using an impulse heat sealer and immersed into the juice (7 samples per bottle). In the 1 liter cartons only extrusion coated LDPE was used, as received from PKL,... [Pg.298]

Polyethylene films. In order to elucidate the effect of the polyethylene contact surface, and separate possible contribution by the carton itself, untreated and corona treated (oxidized) polyethylene strips, made of LDPE of similar properties to that used in PKL cartons, were immersed in model solutions. The model solution consisted of 10% sucrose, 0.3% citric acid, 0.1% ascorbic acid, 0.05/1 emulsified commercial orange oil and 0.1% potassium sorbate. Also strips of LDPE, from the inner liner of the "bag in the box" at a surface to volume ratio double the actual ratio in a 6 gallon bag, were inserted into glass jars, which were hot filled with orange juice and stored at 35°C. [Pg.299]

Polyolefine films are the most applicable, in which the high-density polymer layers fulfil the strengthening and barrier functions and a layer of low-density polyolefine contains a Cl [19,28,30]. For instance, in a strengthened multilayer Cortec VCI-126 film the outer layer is formed of LDPE with HOPE strips. The inner inhibited layer is made of LDPE. [Pg.88]

Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) foils are cleaned with dichloromethane to remove the impurities. The foils are then activated, imder dynamic conditions at atmospheric pressure and room temperature, with diffuse coplanar surface barrier discharge equipment. The treatment is carried out for 15 s under an air atmosphere using a 200 W power supply. Plasma is generated by two parallel banded system of electrodes (1 mm wide, 50 micron thick, with 0.5 mm spacing between the strips, made of silver-paste) embedded in 96% aluminium oxide of high purity, while the electrodes are supplied with a high frequency sinusoidal voltage (-15 kHz, Um 10 kV). [Pg.42]

Within narrow iimits regarding the geometry and the material it is possible to demold undercuts through an elastic strip-over Moderate elastic deformation and high elongating capability of the plastic e.g. for the production of lids made from LDPE, may save a complex demolding mechanism. [Pg.45]

In polyolefins, it is used mainly in LDPE wire and cable insulation. Other uses reported or claimed include EVA wire and cable and foam carpet-backing EMA wire and cable EPR and EPDM wire and cable, electrical insulation, roofing, and automotive parts— white-wall tires, hoses, seals, and weather stripping XLPE wire and cable chlorosulfonated polyethylene and HDPE and polybutene. There is considerable interest in its use in PP cabinets (less smoke than polystyrene). [Pg.565]
