Heat resistance requirements differ depending on the particular application under consideration. In all cases, the modulus should not drop by more than about 25% between room temperature and the maximum rated temperature for the application. These are given in Table 13.10. [Pg.964]

In one example, over 150 parts of a steel riding mower have been incorporated into two injection molded thermoplastic panels made from a PC/polyester blend. These are adhesively bonded to a lower fiber reinforced PU lower member. Although the plastic material cost is ten times that of the sheet metal it replaces, economies in assembly, painting and part inventory give the final product a 10% lower cost. [Pg.965]

The aluminum die-cast deck of a mower tractor has been replaced with PC/PBT alloy incorporating molded-in color, saving 3.6 kg of weight and 25% of cost. The same material finds application in tractor hoods. PC/ABS has also been used on the inlet of a vacuum/chipper. Important properties for these applications can be summarized as resists breakage scratch resistance UV resistance injection moldability [Pg.965]

PC/PET and PC/PBT blends combine PC toughness with the chemical resistance of polyester to offer a desirable combination of high strength, toughness (including at low temperature), chemical resistance and excellent UV stability along with improved flame retardancy and colorability. [Pg.965]

They find use in consumer products for items such as snow thrower engine covers and control panels, tractor shrouds and consoles, lawn mower housings and grilles, and lawn and garden tools. [Pg.965]

High product costs limit distribution to high value crop markets. This includes commercial ornamental production such as nurseries and greenhouses, citms production, and strawberry production. Limited amounts are sold to the consumer lawn and garden market. [Pg.136]

Millions of pounds (1 lb = 0.454 k) of pesticides are used on croplands, forests, lawns, and gardens in the United States each year. A large quantity of hazardous pesticides is also released by the pesticide industry to the environment. These hazardous pesticides drain off into surface waters or seep into underground water supplies. Many pesticides pose health problems if they get into drinking water and the water is not properly treated. The maximum limits for pesticides in drinking water are (a) endrin, 0.0002 mg/L (b) lindane, 0.004 mg/L (c) methoxychlor, 0.1 mg/L (d) toxaphene, 0.005 mg/L (e) 2,4-D, 0.1 mg/L and (f) 2,4,5-TP silvex, 0.01 mg/L. [Pg.78]

Chlordane - America s leading lawn and garden insecticide. Used extensively by pest control operators for termite control, because of its long lasting effectiveness. [Pg.72]

Both the volume of use and the amount of money spent demonstrates our dependency on pesticides. In 1997, the EPA reported that 4.6 billion pounds of pesticide were used in the United States, which is equivalent to 4.4 pounds per person. Of this, almost 1 billion pounds, with 600 different active ingredients, were used in agriculture and another 0.26 billion pounds used by homeowners, government, and industry on lawns and gardens. This use alone amounts to an expenditure of 11.9 billion, of which 8.3 billion is spent by agriculture. Wood preservatives add another 0.66 billion pounds and disinfectants 2.5 billion pounds (Table 6.1). Worldwide 5.7 billion pounds of agricultural-based pesticides were used at a cost of 37 billion (see presentation for details). [Pg.75]

Carbamates act similar to organophosphates by interfering with nerve system enzymes. They are derived from carbamic acid, H NCOOH, and share many of the properties of organophosphates (Figure 18.9). The carbamate known as carbaryl (commercial trade name is Sevin) was synthesized in 1956 and has been used extensively since that time. Carbaryl s advantages are that its toxicity to mammals is low and it kills a broad spectrum of insects. It is widely used in a number of household lawn and garden products. Other common carbamates include aldicarb (Temik) and carbofuran (Furadan). [Pg.284]
