Micelle solutions were originally characterized with a bulk aqueous phase where the hydrophobic carbon chains were turned inward to help stabilize the oil phase. Later, reverse micelles were also characterized, where the conditions were reversed. A bulk oil phase was used with the hydrophilic head groups turned inward to help stabilize the aqueous phase. The stereoselective release behaviors of low-swelling molecularly imprinted polymer bead matrices in pressed-coat tablets were studied using either R- or S-propranolol selective MIPs. The in vitro release profiles of the low-swelling matrices showed a difference in the release of enantiomers, in that the nontemplate isomer was released faster than the template isomer. However, in the last phase of dissolution this difference was reduced and later reversed [64]. In their initial studies, Shechter and Wynstra had demonstrated that these catalysts could achieve high selectivity of the epoxy-phenol reaction in a solution of excess phenol. In 1988, Walde and coworkers studied the kinetic and structural properties of another serine protease, namely trypsin, in two reverse micellar systems, AOT/ isooctane and CTAB/chloroform/isooctane, employing three different model substrates, an amide and two esters [71], The main aim of this work was to compare the behavior of trypsin in reverse micelles with that of a-chymotrypsin. In the case of trypsin, superactivity was not observed and in general no obvious similarities between the two enzymes were recorded. Some years later, reverse micelles formulated with biocompatible surfactants such as lecithin of variable chain lengths in isooctane/alcohol were studied in relation to their capacity to solubilize a-chymotrypsin and trypsin [72]. The hydrolytic behavior of the same serine proteases, namely a-chymotrypsin and trypsin, in both AOT and CTAB microemulsions was studied and related to the polarity of the reaction medium as expressed by the logP value and measured by the hydrophilic probe 1-methyl-8-oxyquinolinium betaine [39], In this study a remarkable superactivity of trypsin in reverse micelles formed with the cationic surfactant CTAB was reported. [Pg.358]

Thiele discovered nitro- and amino-guanidine and described a preparation of hydrazine from aminoguanidine, also of hydrazoic acid from hydrazine, ethyl jnitrite, and alkali, and at first independently proposed and adopted the correcyclic formula on the basis of misleading parachor results. Thielie and A. Lachman discovered nitramide by way of nitrourethane, CjHjp CO NH NO. They formulated it both as the amide, NHg NOg, or imidd NH NO OH, of nitric acid. Other chemicals such as caffeine (also a significant component of popular common cola drinks) were also suspected as possible contributors to low bone density, due to the known effect of caffeine on calciuria. One other study, involving 30 women over the course of a week, suggests that phosphoric acid in colas has no such effect, and postulates that caffeine has only a temporary effect, which is later reversed. The authors of this study conclude that the skeletal effects of carbonated beverage consumption are likely due primarily to milk displacement.
