Knowledge of the health of the cells after a stroke is fundamental if the cells are still alive, the use of neuroprotectant drugs can be useful to minimise brain damage otherwise, their utilisation is useless. A chemical parameter capable of assessing the state of health of tissue cells is pH. In fact, the death of tissue cells is followed by formation of lactic acid, which causes a decrease in blood pH. Normal values are around 7.4 a decrease below this value in the region in which a stroke has taken place is an index of the death of cells. [Pg.424]

Malic and citric acids have been adequately identified from molasses as their crystalline hydrazides.119 It is probable that at least the former is a normal juice constituent. Lactic acid was identified as its zinc salt in molasses119 it arises from bacterial action. Formic acid is present119 it probably has an origin, at least in part, in sugar decomposition. Acetic and propionic acids are components and their amounts serve as a rough index of the activity of the microorganisms introduced into the molasses. The microbial count of cane juice, molasses and related products has been determined (Table IV).190... [Pg.309]

To prepare degradable polymers, graft copolymers of PLA macromonomer and tert-huXy acrylate were prepared by free radical polymerization. An increase in lactic acid units resulted in an increase in degradation rate [84]. ATRP of MMA (96.5%) and (meth)acrylate-terminated PLA macromonomer (Mn 2800g/mol, 3.5%) yielded a homogeneously branched PMMA-g-PLA of low polydispersity index (PDI = 1.15) [85]. The reactivity ratio of MMA for conventional radical polymerization is 1.09 while with ATRP is 0.57. This accounts for the lower PDI of ATRP synthesized PMMA-g-PLA. [Pg.53]

In thiamine deficiency, pyruvate accumulates in the blood and tissues and there is a change in the lactate-pyruvate ratio. These findings have been used in detecting thiamine deficiency in man. MIorwitt has proposed as a test of thiamine nutrition the simultaneous measurement of lactic acid, pyruvic acid, and glucose in the blood 5 min. after mild exercise and 60 min. after ingestion of glucose. The carbohydate index (C.I.) is determined from the formula... [Pg.554]
