The nitrogenase proteins are generally characterized by two letters indicating the species and strains of bacteria and the numerals 1 for the MoFe protein and 2 for the Fe protein. Thus, the Fe protein from Azotobacter vinelandii is Av2 and the MoFe protein from Klebsiella pneumoniae is Kpl. [Pg.163]

Bacteria which are almost always sensitive to the sulphonamides include Strep, pneumoniae, /3-haemolytic streptococci, Escherichia coli and Proteus mirabilis those almost always resistant include Enterococcus faecalis, Ps. aeruginosa, indole-positive Proteus and Klebsiella whereas bacteria showing a marked variation in response include Staph, aureus, gonococci, El. influenzae and hospital strains of E. coli and Pr. mirabilis. [Pg.116]

Dihydroxyphenylacetate extradiol dioxygenase from Klebsiella pneumoniae strain M5al contains magnesium and is not activated by Fe (Gibello et al. 1994). [Pg.124]

Similar to catechins, several studies have reported that proanthocyanidins exhibit a more or less pronoimced antibacterial activity. Chimg et al. [76] reported that proanthocyanidins determine the growth inhibition of strains of Aeromonas spp.. Bacillus spp., Clostridium botulinum, Clostridium per-fringens, Enterobacter spp., Klebsiella spp., Proteus spp.. Pseudomonas spp.. Shigella spp., S. aureus. Streptococcus spp., and Vibrio spp. [Pg.251]

Some toxicity studies were performed analyzing Bfx and Fx mutagenic effects [240-242], For example, Bfx and Bfz nitro-substituted were tested for mutagenicity in Salmonella typhimurium (S. typhimurium) TA 98 and TA 100 strains with and without metabolic activation (Ames test). All the Bfx (10/10) and some of the Bfz (9/15) are mutagenic without activation. Other study has demonstrated benzofuroxan (128, Fig. 20) is mutagenic in the Luria and Del-brueck s fluctuation test, with Klebsiella pneumoniae, and in the Ames test. In another study it has been found that compound 137 (Fig. 21) is not mutagenic to S. typhimurium. [Pg.300]

Reports on a few other desulfurization organisms also exists, including Nocardia [98], S. acidocaldarius [5,99], Arthrobacter [100], R. toruloides, [101], C. elegans [102], Klebsiella spp. [103], and Alcaligenes xylosoxydans strain deposited with the ATCC under PTA-4669 [104], A S. acidocaldarius species was reported to desulfurize DBT and produce sulfate [5], A similar strain was later used to study the DBT desulfurization [99] in complex media using tryptone however, the authors reported that the strain was not active when grown on sucrose. It was apparently inhibited by DBT and also affected by the interface in oil-water mixtures [105],... [Pg.83]
