Killer states

A non-Humean response is to maintain that state and event types have at least some of their causal powers essentially, namely, the (conditional) powers to produce their manifestations. I will not attempt to determine here whether we should be Humeans or non-Humeans about causation. Suffice it for the moment just to note that even if event types endow causal powers essentially, the question remains whether functional state and event types endow causal powers. Thus, suppose that the Humean view is indeed wrong, and that some structures are essentially killer structures, and so essentially endow the power to kill. The question would still remain why the state of having some or other killer structure is a state that is itself a killer state - a state that endows the power to kill — given that it is not identical with any of the killer structures. Why think that the property of having some property or other that essentially endows the power to kill is itself a property that endows the power to kill Similarly, even if all the bases or core realizers of a functional property, water solubility, essentially endow the (conditional) power to cause dissolvings in water, what reason is there to think that the functional property does - that water solubility itself does For the moment, suffice it to note that these questions deserve answers. [Pg.86]

It has been suggested recently that PPII helix may be the killer conformation in such diseases (Blanch et al., 2000). This was prompted by the observation, described in Section III,B, of a positive band at 1318 cm-1, not present in the ROA spectrum of the native state, that dominates the ROA spectrum of a destabilized intermediate of human lysozyme (produced by heating to 57°C at pH 2.0) that forms prior to amyloid fibril formation. Elimination of water molecules between extended polypeptide chains with fully hydrated 0=0 and N—H groups to form... [Pg.105]

Two of the biggest health problems that overweight individuals face are a greatly elevated risk of heart disease and stroke. The American Heart Association (AHA) has found a direct link between these health conditions and being overweight. Heart disease is now the number-one killer of women in the United States, and the rise of overweight and obesity can be directly correlated to it.2... [Pg.12]

Paraquat is a broad-spectrum contact weed killer and herbage desiccant that is used widely in agriculture and horticulture. Paraquat was originally formulated in 1882, but its herbicidal properties were not discovered until 1955. Since its introduction in the early 1960s, paraquat has been used extensively in about 130 countries, including the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States, on a wide variety of agricultural crops (Fletcher 1974 Haley 1979 Kelly et al. 1979 Anonymous 1988). [Pg.1160]

You plan to solve an eight-year-old murder and disprove the Council of Ten s judgment I had seen Nostradamus attempt and often perform miracles, but this seemed beyond even him. The entire resources of the state had pursued the killer of Gentile Mi chi el. [Pg.41]

Taxol is the showcase for the billions spent by the NCI over many decades. But there has not yet been a dramatic decrease in the death rate from cancer in the United States. Future challenges include discovering whether some derivatives of taxol would be even more effective than taxol, more easy to administer, and could be made at lower cost. The total synthesis of taxol also gives us the tool to investigate numerous alternatives. Another challenge is whether we can go beyond ovarian and breast cancer to treat the big killers of lung and stomach cancer. [Pg.45]

Despite the success of purely optical methods such as luminescence and absorption in studying shallow energy levels, they are seldom used for characterization of deep states. This is mainly because the deeper levels of interest are usually nonradiative ones or killer centers for which such techniques are not applicable. In addition, the deep position within the energy gap means optical experiments must be performed in the infrared where... [Pg.7]

According to the latest report of the American Diabetes Association in 2006, there are at least 20.8 million children and adults in the United States, or 7% of the population, who have diabetes. While an estimated 14.6 million have been diagnosed with diabetes, unfortunately, 6.2 million people (or nearly one-third) are unaware that they have the disease. That is why diabetes is also known as the silent killer. The rapid increase in the number of silent killers has caught the attention of the research world and recently almost double the number of scientists are working in this area compared to the last decade. [Pg.313]

In addition to its antiviral actions, interferon has an antiproliferative effect and modifies the functions of macrophages and natural killer cells. Thymosin, a protein synthesized by the epithelioid component of the thymus, may be potentially valuable in patients with DiGeorge s syndrome or other T cell deficiency states. Levamisole augments T cell-mediated immunity and may be of value in the immunodeficiency associated with Hodgkin s disease. [Pg.498]

Pharmacists in France, England, and the United States regularly marketed heroin as an excellent pain killer and a cure for disease, including respiratory ailments and diarrhea. [Pg.239]
