Nomex is another aramid fiber Kevlar and Nomex differ only in that the substitution pattern in the aromatic rings is para in Kevlar but meta in Nomex Nomex is best known for its fire resistant properties and is used in protective clothing for fire fighters astronauts and race car drivers... [Pg.868]

Rigid-rod polymers are often Hquid crystalline polymers classified as lyotropic, such as the aramids Nomex and Kevlar, or thermotropic Hquid crystalline polymers, such as Vectran. [Pg.64]

The crystal stmcture of PPT is pseudo-orthorhombic (essentially monoclinic) with a = 0.785/nm b = 0.515/nm c (fiber axis) = 1.28/nm and d = 90°. The molecules are arranged in parallel hydrogen-bonded sheets. There are two chains in a unit cell and the theoretical crystal density is 1.48 g/cm. The observed fiber density is 1.45 g/cm. An interesting property of the dry jet-wet spun fibers is the lateral crystalline order. Based on electron microscopy studies of peeled sections of Kevlar-49, the supramolecular stmcture consists of radially oriented crystaUites. The fiber contains a pleated stmcture along the fiber axis, with a periodicity of 500—600 nm. [Pg.66]

Applications. The polyamides have important appHcations. The very high degree of polymer orientation that is achieved when Hquid crystalline solutions are extmded imparts exceptionally high strengths and moduli to polyamide fibers and films. Du Pont markets such polymers, eg, Kevlar, and Monsanto has a similar product, eg, X-500, which consists of polyamide and hydra2ide-type polymers (31) (see High performance fibers Polyamides, fibers). [Pg.202]

Similady, hquid-crystal polymers exhibit considerable order in the hquid state, either in solution (lyotropic) or melt (thermotropic). When crystallized from solution or melt, they have a high degree of extended-chain crystallinity, and thus have superior mechanical properties. Composites. High molecular weight PPS can be combiaed with long (0.6 cm to continuous) fiber to produce advanced composite materials (131). Such materials having PPS as the polymer matrix have been developed by usiag a variety of reinforcements, including glass, carbon, and Kevlar fibers as mat, fabric, and unidirectional reinforcements. Thermoplastic composites based on PPS have found application ia the aircraft, aerospace, automotive, appliance, and recreation markets (see Composite materials, polymer-matrix). [Pg.450]

Other Reinforcement Ma.teria.Is. Other materials that have been used in tire compounds for reinforcement are chopped wire (brass-coated), cotton and nylon flock, chopped nylon strands, polyethylene, zinc oxide, and chopped Kevlar. Most of these materials have very limited apphcation and some are obsolete. Others are used more extensively in soHd mbber industrial tires than in pneumatics. [Pg.250]

Several patents (327—329) have been issued that cl aim processes for production of ultrahigh tensile strength PVA fibers, which have a tensile strength comparable to that of Kevlar. [Pg.489]

The primary driving forces behind investigation of new solvents include environmental concerns and the abiUty to form Hquid crystals in the new solvent systems. By analogy with Kevlar, a synthetic aromatic polyamide fiber, spinning from a Hquid crystalline solution should yield cellulose fibers with improved strength, as has been demonstrated in laboratory experiments. [Pg.243]
