Aromatic polyamides and polyesters are examples of stiff chain polymers. Poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) (Kevlar , 1-23) can be made by reaction (4-50) in a mixture of hexamethylphosphoramide and /V-methylpyrrolidone ... [Pg.150]

Poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide (Kevlar) (b) copolyester of p-hydroxybenzoic acid and biphenylene terephthalate (Xydar) (c) copolyester of p-hydroxybenzoic acid and 2,6-hydroxynaphthoic acid (Vectra). [Pg.52]

Kuhn model, Equation (1.1). Data for several polymers in addition to polyethylene are given, including a rigid-rod aromatic nylon polymer, poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) (Kevlar ), as well as the aliphatic nylon polymer poly(hexamethylene adipamide) (nylon-6,6). [Pg.3]

Kevlar, or aramid as it is generically known, is a highly oriented polymer - poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide). Kevlar fiber has the interesting property of having a linear TCE in its axial direction of -2 x 10 6/°C. The E-glass used in normal PWBs has a positive linear TCE of +5 x 10-room temperature TCEs in the X-Y plane of around 4 to 8 x 10 6/ C(3) and solder joint cracking is greatly reduced or eliminated(2). Quartz is another reinforcement, available in fabric form, which can be used to control the planar TCEs of a laminate PWB. Quartz has a TCE of +0.54 x 10-6/°C in the axial direction. [Pg.380]

The aramide fibers include those made of poly(w-phenylene isophthalamide) (Nomex types) and poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) (Kevlar types). The industrially produced aramide fiber Technora is a copolyamide. [Pg.153]

The effect of the polyamide benzimidazole group on the surface wettability and interfacial adhesion of fiber/matrix composites of two kinds of aramid fibers from poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) (Kevlar-49) and poly-(polyamide benzimidazole-co-p-phenylene terephthalamide) (DAFIII) have been... [Pg.309]

There have been no similar attempts to determine comprehensive sets of elastic constants for oriented fibres or monofilaments. Kawabata [21] devised an apparatus that used a linear differential transformer to measure diametral changes of 0.05 iim in single fibres of diameter 5 fxm subjected to transverse compression. Equation (7.2) above was then used to calculate the transverse modulus El = l/ ii. Results were obtained for poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) (Kevlar) and high-modulus polyethylene (Tekmilon) fibres. Values of E were in the range 2.31 -2.59 GPa for Kevlar and a value of 1 -2 GPa was found for Tekmilon. [Pg.137]
