Titles of journal articles are included in the references, but they have been truncated, dropping words like analysis, determination, quantitative, trace, new, improved, and so on. Whenever possible, hard-to-get references are omitted in favor of those more recent or more easily obtained. Since about half the copies of the first edition were sold outside the United States, I have taken steps to make the book more useful worldwide by including foreign-language references and translating units of measure as necessary. ISO standards are referenced when available. 

There has been some discussion as to whether the word "substance" is appropriate in this context. For example, Earley believes it is not because it implies a form of materiality which is not intended [21. In this article, the word "substance" will be used, however, because of the terminology coined by Paneth when he drew his distinction between the two senses of the term "element." However, Paneth actually uses the German words "grundstuff" and "einfacherstuff" which were translated as basic substance and simple substance, respectively, in the article that appeared in the British journal for the Philosophy of Science and which has been most widely read.

The authors describe experiments on six NR compounds commonly used for latex gloves to determine the potential hazards of skin contact with reference to curing compounds and accelerators, including mercaptobenzthiazole and zinc dialkyldithiocarbamates. Simulation methods and the influence of a common hand disinfectant were investigated. Title of Journal which is a translation from Russian. It is published by The Faraday Press, Inc, NY, 10011. In Vol 1, pp 3-4 (Jan-March 1965) there is an article by M.A. Lavrent ev, entitled Future Developments in the Field of Combustion and Explosion . 

When citing an article printed in the English translation of a foreign-language journal, include reference to the original article, if possible, and use a semicolon to separate the two citations.

Translations. This collection contains abstracts and complete translations of Russian and other foreign technical publications as well as weekly reviews of various areas of Soviet science. Among the translation series available through the Office of Technical Services on a subscription basis are Current Review of the Soviet Technical Press (weekly) and English Abstracts of Selected Articles from Soviet Bloc and Mainland China Technical Journals. Translations are assigned an identification number which consists of the year of the translation followed by the accession number. All translations received by OTS or the John Crerar Library in Chicago are announced in Technical Translations, which is discussed below. 

The almost 10,000 references are indexed at the end of the book and include the title of the cited book, book section, chapter, journal or review article. The titles of seminal papers written in a foreign language were translated to English. The name of the author of a specific synthetic example was chosen as the one having an asterisk in the reference.
