Transition Joints. Use of explosion-clad transition joints avoids the limitations involved in joining two incompatible materials by bolting or riveting. Many transition joints can be cut from a single large-area flat-plate clad and deflvered to limit the temperature at the bond interface so as to avoid undesirable diffusion. Conventional welding practices may be used for both similar metal welds. 

Metal parts are also joined by a range of fasteners rivets, bolts, or tabs. In using them, the stress concentration at the fastener or its hole must be allowed for fracture frequently starts at a fastening point.

Joining Tantalum can be joined by riveting, brazing and welding however, due to the good properties of welded joints the former techniques are seldom used. 

The mechanical joining of aluminium alloys to steels using rivets and bolts, a combination which is difficult to avoid in the shipbuilding industry, represents a typical example of a situation where subsequent bimetallic corrosion could occur. Advanced adhesives are composite liquids that can be used, for example, to join aircraft parts, thus avoiding the use of some 30,000 rivets that are heavy, are labor-intensive to install, and pose quality-control problems. Process vessels are built up from preformed parts cylinders, heads, and fittings, joined by fusion welding. Riveted construction was used extensively in the past (prior to the 1940s) but is now rarely seen.

Beryllium and its alloys (e.g., beryllium copper) have gained interest in the aerospace industry and specialty sports equipment industry in recent years. Brazing or riveting can be used for joining, but these methods are expensive, and distortion or highly stressed areas may be encountered. The metal must be handled with care when the processing produces dust, chips, scale, slivers, mists, or fumes, since airborne particles of beryllium and beryllium oxide are toxic with latent health effects. Abrasives and chemicals used with beryllium must be disposed of properly.
