Dangerous jobs

An extremely important safety issue with respect to ah. wood product manufacturing processes is personal worker safety. Ah of the processes use much moving machinery, usuahy including many saws or knives. Workers must continuahy remember the inherent dangers these machines involve as weh as other possible dangerous situations which could result from malfunctions or other errors. In addition, most processes are more or less dusty and noisy. Most employers require use of safety glasses and many require hearing protection, safety shoes, and hardhats as weh as other kinds of protection needed for Specific jobs. [Pg.379]

The danger is that often many issues are left to the contingency sum, which means that it is spent before other known matters come to light. It is better to report a higher bid figure, which has the possibility of being reduced at the end of the job, rather than a lower one, which is almost certain to increase. [Pg.87]

Where there is a risk to the employee carrying out work, in addition to a Method Statement a permit to work should be used. A permit to work is a formal written means of making sure that potentially dangerous jobs are examined first, before authorizing the work to commence. Its task is twofold it ensures that the person making the system safe... [Pg.1068]

What this illustrates is that an MSDS describes the dangers of large industrial quantities of a substance, not the tiny amounts usually found in consumer products. Nonetheless, once you are experienced at reading an MSDS, it is a good place to get information on the safety of a chemical compound. In this book I cover safety issues only occasionally—and briefly. To do a more thorough job of that would require a much larger book, and there is already a wealth of information available. [Pg.282]

The quality of life experienced by people with MCS is shaped, to a great extent, by the level of awareness of environmental health issues where they live and work. Some are recipients of workplace accommodations in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act others are harassed and ostracized at work, or fired from their jobs. Some disabled by chemical exposures in the workplace receive workers compensation the majority of chemical-illness claims are denied. Some cities, schools and other institutions have adopted fragrance-free policies and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs to reduce chemical barriers and dangers in public places others still resist despite all the prevalence studies and research indicating that MCS is a serious threat to public health. [Pg.11]

Miner means someone who works in a mine. A miner s job can be very dangerous. Mlnor s someone who is underage or less important. We do not sell cigarettes to minors. [Pg.100]

A. The primary role is to keep the person tripping safe, and keep those around that person safe. This must take precedence over all else. The main dangers to be guarded against are physical, not emotional. Your primary job is guardian not... [Pg.44]

Often, relief valves fail to close once they have popped open. I hate this I hate the tension. Will it or won t it reseat by itself Or, will some operator have to climb up the 180-ft crude distillation column, and hammer on the side of the relief valve until it reseats Especially if the relief valve is venting to the atmosphere rather than the flare, this can be a nasty and dangerous job. [Pg.399]

FIGURE 6-24. Shown in this figure also is the combination of a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor and tyramine. However, in this case the MAO inhibitor is of the reversible type (reversible inhibitor of MAO A, or RIMA). In contrast to the situation shown in the previous figure (Fig. 6— 23), the accumulation of norepinephrine (NE) caused by tyramine (indicated in red circle 1) can actually strip the RIMA off MAO (arrow 2). MAO, now devoid of its inhibitor, can merrily do its job, which is to destroy the NE (red circle 3) and thus prevent the dangerous accumulation of NE. Such a reversal of MAO by NE is only possible with a RIMA and not with the classical MAO inhibitors, which are completely irreversible. [Pg.221]

Many users are concerned about the maintenance frequency of their SRVs installed base. Many major companies have their own internal procedures or are following codes and recommendations. However, there are no strict legal requirements that touch on maintenance frequency of SRVs. Once in some boiler installations in the past, it was a rule, or better a habit, for the firemen to pop the valves daily or weekly by means of the lifting lever, an unenviable job as it was extremely dangerous for the personnel and also not very good for the valve itself. It also required a minimum operating pressure of 75% of set pressure, usually of very hot steam, something you do not want to be very close to. This procedure also led to a lot of accidents and so is not used very frequently anymore. Other companies only tested and maintained their valves after an accident or major pressure upset, and all the rest was/is between both these extremes. [Pg.229]
