In the ASAHI KASEI Medical (Tokyo, Japan) system, the plasmapheresis step is performed by a microporous membrane (Plasmaflo) made of a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl alcohol (PEVA), with a maximum pore size of0.3 pm. The extracted plasma flows through an activated charcoal column Hemosorba and an anion-exchange column (copolymer of styrenedivinyl benzene) Plasorba that binds bilirubin and bile acids [28]. Sadder Laboratories markets a PC-based system that can search its coUection of 30,000 C-nmr spectra by substmcture as weU as by peak assignments and by fiiU spectmm (64). Other databases include one by Varian and a CD-ROM system containing polymer spectra produced by Tsukuba University, Japan. CSEARCH, a system developed at the University of Vieima by Robien, searches a database of almost 16,000 C-nmr. Molecular Design Limited (MDL) has adapted the Robien database to be searched in the MACCS and ISIS graphical display and search environment (63). Projects are under way to link the MDL system with the Sadder Hbrary and its unique search capabiHties. [Pg.121]

The National Chemical Laboratory for Industry (NCLl), Japan, has developed an integrated Spectral Database System (SDBS) which is available to users in Japan. AU spectra were deterrnined at NCLl under controUed conditions and are available on a PC/CD-ROM or magnetic tape. The system has both H-nmr (6000 compounds) and C-nmr spectra (5700 compounds), along with searching software. NCLl has also developed an integrated C— H-nmr system that can be used for two-dimensional data elucidation (70,71). [Pg.121]

A computer file of about 19,000 peak wavenumbers and intensities, along with search software, is distributed by the Infrared Data Committee of Japan (IRDC). Donated spectra, which are evaluated by the Coblentz Society in coUaboration with the Joint Committee on Atomic and Molecular Physical Data (JCAMP), are digitized and made avaUable (64). Almost 25,000 ir spectra are avaUable on the SDBS system developed by the NCLl as described. A project was initiated at the University of California, Riverside, in 1986 for the constmction of a database of digitized ftir spectra. The team involved also developed algorithms for spectra evaluation (75). Other sources of spectral Hbraries include Sprouse Scientific, Aston Scientific, and the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). [Pg.121]

JICST/JOIS. The Japan Information Center for Science and Technology (fICST) Mass Spectral Database is accessible to users in Japan through the JICST Eactual Database System (fOlS-E). The database uses the NIST/EPA/ MSCD data collection supplemented by spectra from the Mass Spectrometry Society of Japan (84). [Pg.122]

In the early 1990s, there were more than 9 x 10 km of fiber-optical telecommunication links in practical use in the United States. In addition, many other countries, notably Canada, Japan, and western Europe, have installed extensive fiber-optic communication systems. There are several transoceanic fiber-based telephone cables. Fibers are in use for intracity telephone links, where bulky copper [7440-50-8] wine is replaced by thin optical fibers. This allows crowded conduits in large cities to carry more messages than if copper wine were used. The design and testing of these developmental plants are well underway. The evolutionary designs have received final design approval from the U.S. NRC. Pneumatic pipe systems are used to move blood samples, medicine, and suppHes between buildings in hospital complexes cash and receipts in drive-up banks parts and materials in factories refuse from apartment complexes and grain, cement, and many other materials. Most of these are small diameter and usually short however, a 17-km, 1220-mm dia pneumatic pipeline has been used to transport rock in the former Soviet Union since 1981, and a 3.2-km, 1000-mm dia line has moved limestone from the mine to a cement plant in Japan since 1983 (22). [Pg.48]

Japan held 37.5% of the world antibiotic market ki 1988, the USA 23.2%, Italy 8.0%, the United Kingdom 5.4%, Germany 3.6%, and other countries 22.3% (20). The disproportionate size of the Japanese market is in part a consequence of the inherent strengths of Japanese industry which include expertise in fermentation technology and intensive chemical manipulation of known stmctures.
