Janies studies

In contrast to the borylation of alkane C-H bonds, the coupling of aryl halides with amines was based on a literature precedent from another group published about a decade before our initial studies. Kosugi, Kameyama and Migita published the coupling of aryl halides with tin amides." Mechanistic studies we conducted on this process led us to the perhaps obvious realization that the reaction" could be conducted with amines and a silylamide base instead of tin amides (equation 4)." Surveys of bases with similar p a values led Janis Louie to conduct reactions with alkoxide bases. Similar studies were conducted at nearly the same time by Steve Buchwald and coworkers."... [Pg.22]

There are limited data available on the elimination of other CDD congeners in humans. In the Flesch-Janys et al. (1996) study of 48 workers at a German pesticide facility, elimination half times were estimated for several CDD congeners. The estimated half-lives were 15.7 years for 1,2,3,7,8-PeCDD, 8.4 years for 1,2,3,4,7,8-HxCDD, 13.1 years for 1,2,3,6,7,8-HxCDD, 4.9 years for 1,2,3,7,8,9-HxCDD, 3.7 years for 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-HpCDD, and 6.7 years for OCDD. By 1949, interest in hypnosis by the American military and intelligence community had resulted in a study conducted for the US Air Force by the Rand Corporation. In his Research Memorandum, Rand s Irving L Janis discussed such matters as Inducing Hypnosis Against A person s Will as well as Introducing Post Hypnotic Amnesia in the subjects to ensure they would be unable to remember having being hypnotised in the first place. 4... [Pg.12]

The APA (1990b) task force also ignored older controlled clinical studies by Janis (1948, 1950 Janis et al., 1951) showing extensive, permanent loss of important personal memories and life history following routine ECT. Janis (1948, 1950 Janis Astrachan, 1951) interviewed 19 patients before and after routine ECT, and 11 control patients with similar diagnoses in the same hospitals. The results 1 month postshock were striking Every shock patient had significant memory losses. Many patients were unable to recall 10-20 life experiences which had been available to recall prior to electroshock treatment. [Pg.235]

Microdialysis and ultrafiltration are complementary sampling techniques which have been developed for studying the interstitial space in vivo (Janie and Kissinger, 1993). Both of these techniques employ membrane probes that can be implanted in the tissue of interest, and the studies can be conducted in awake moving animals or in human subjects. Because these techniques sample low molecular weight compounds, and because they provide samples that require very little preparation prior to analysis, they hold considerable potential as tools for nutritional research. [Pg.183]

The fact that ultraiiltration and microdialysis probes allow for repeated studies in the same animal with minimum trauma to the animal makes long-term studies possible. Microdialysis probes can be used for weeks. Ultrafiltration is especially useful for long-term studies, since ultraiiltration probes are very durable and will last for months with no decrease in recovery. In these long-term studies, there is minimal tissue reaction to the probe. A small fibrous sheath forms around the probe fibers in about a week, but then remains stable. This fibrous sheath may contribute to a decrease in flow rate during the first week in some species. Ultrafiltration probes have been used for up to 6 months in dogs (Janie et al, 1991), 55 days in mice (Janie et al, 1992), and 1 month in a human clinical study (Ash et al, 1992). [Pg.190]
