Ocular Effects. Humans that were experimentally exposed to 200 ppm of trichloroethylene vapor for 7 hours experienced mild eye irritation (20% of the subjects), beginning after 30 minutes (Stewart et al. 1970). The subjects experiencing these symptoms did not again experience them when exposed in the same manner on 5 other consecutive days. Itchy watery eyes (Bauer and Rabens 1974 El Ghawabi et al. 1973) and inflamed eyes (Schattner and Malnick 1990) have also been reported following contact with the vapor.

A 25-year-old Caucasian man presents with itchy lesions on his scalp, chest, back, elbows, and knees. He says these lesions started about a month ago, and seem to be spreading. Upon examination, the lesions are well-demarcated and are reddish-violet in color—easily distinguished from normal skin. They appeared raised and are covered with loose scales. Swimming pools must be kept around a neutral pH in order for people to swim in them comfortably. Swimming pool water that is too acidic can burn a swimmer s eyes or nose. It also makes the skin dry and itchy and destroys bathing suits much faster than a neutral pH. Acidic water not only destroys bathing suits, it can dissolve the materials used to build the pool, such as marble or plaster. 

When the water is too alkaline, swimmers experience similar physical discomfort—burning eyes and nose and itchy, dry skin. The effect on the pool, however, is different. When water is alkaline, calcium dissolved in the pool water can precipitate (fall) out of solution. A precipitate is a solid that forms from a solution due to a chemical reaction. This solid creates unsightly scales on the sides of the pool. Like water that is too acidic, alkaline water also affects the efficiency of the chlorine. More chlorine needs to be added to alkaline water to effectively disinfect the pool. Over time, a swimming pool that is not kept at a neutral pH can become very expensive to maintain. 

Burmese eat the fruits to promote appetite, and swallow the sap to induce vomiting and relieve the bowels from costiveness. In the Philippines, the leaves are used externally to calm itchiness, and a decoction of the bark is drunk to treat lung diseases. In Indonesia, the leaves are used as counter-irritant in sciatica and lumbago. In Malaysia, the vapors emitted when boiling the roots in water are inhaled to treat cough and headache.
