Itching, itchy

Oral antihistamines effectively reduce nasal and nonnasal symptoms of allergic rhinitis. Nasal symptoms include itching, sneezing, rhinorrhea, and nasal congestion. Nonnasal symptoms most commonly include eye complaints (e.g., eye redness, tearing, and itching), itchy palate, or itchy ears (54). 

These herbs are able to clear heat and dry dampness. They are particularly used when the skin lesions are very red, itchy and weeping, indicating accumulation of damp-heat. They are selected not only for treating boils and carbuncles, but also other skin disorders such as eczema with infections caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites. They can also be applied topically to relieve itch and dry oozing. 

In addition to primary skin processes, itchy xerotic skin can also be induced secondarily. For example, environmental factors such as rapid variations in relative humidity as well as the extremely windy, cold, and dry weather associated with the winter season induce skin dryness and itch. In addition, many commonly used topical products containing soaps, detergents, alcohol, and other irritants as well as hot water alone also lead to dry, itchy skin. 

Atopic dermatitis is the most common itchy dermatosis, with well-documented alteration in the stratum comeum function. Numerous studies have revealed an increase in the basal transepidermal water loss (TEWL) in the stratum corneum of patients with this condition. Of note, this increase in TEWL was also described in the clinically unaffected skin of atopies.2 There have been direct correlations shown between the degree of inflammation and severity of barrier impairment in atopic dermatitis. Despite these findings, to date there have been no definitive reports correlating degree of barrier function with itch variability. 

A 65-year-old woman, who had previously tolerated calcitonin nasal spray, developed eye and nose congestion, an itchy nose, and sneezing minutes after using intranasal salmon calcitonin (17). She was later given intramuscular salmon calcitonin and developed generalized urticaria and nasal itching within minutes. Skin testing was positive with eel and salmon calcitonins but not human calcitonin, and she was treated with human calcitonin without adverse effects. 

Use a firm touch when administering medication in an itchy (pruritic) site. A light touch increases itching. 

The patient applies a hydrating cream with vitamin E (see Chapters 2 and 3) four or five times a day to stop the skin drying out and becoming itchy and to prevent scratching and/or complications. The patient can continue to apply a thin layer of Vaseline as long as it is needed to improve dryness or itching.

Skin afflictions from cercarias involve the epidermis because cercarias seem unable to penetrate beyond the derma. Initial itching is followed by an urticarial eruption which resolves within about 0.5 h, leaving maculae after a few hours, these transform into very itchy papules.
