Eddy Currents ttike their name from the swirls (eddies) observed in turbulent water flow. The Greek mythology tells us about Charybdis. A monster eddy current between Italy and Sicily whose attractive field pulled unwary sailors to their destruction. Our kind of eddy currents are usually not so dangerous, they flow in electrical conductors and are a branch of Electromagnetics. The European Union enacted the directive on the control of major-accident hazards involving dangerous substances in response to the 1976 dioxin release from the ICMESA facility near Seveso, Italy the United States enacted a similar Emergency Preparedness and Community Right-to-Know Act in response to the 1984 Bhopal disaster and 1989 Phillips Pasadena, Texas, refinery explosion and fire. 

Public attention was again drawn to dioxin in July 1976 when an explosion at Givaudan s factory at Seveso, Northern Italy, released a vapour cloud of 2,4,5-trichlorophenol, containing dioxin, over the surrounding area. The accident was caused because process operatives did not follow the set procedure. As a result many people were evacuated from their homes for up to two years and a number of women elected abortion because of the potential danger to their unborn children.
