The classification into different types of human hyperlipopro-teinaemias was the main argument of a Course which was held, last year, in this same Institute and before that in Milan (47). It is performed in our country by the Italian Society of Atherosclerosis Studies, and its President, Prof. Paoletti. The typing permits the differential diagnosis of the various forms on a genetic basis, it gives the possibility of identifying other alterations which may induce atherosclerosis and to identify action mechanisms, and allows adequate and specific treatments. We cannot, today, be satisfied with overall solutions. 

The papers in the present volume were presented on November 1st-3rd, 1973, in Rome on the occasion of an International Postgraduate Course sponsored by the Italian Society for the Study of Atherosclerosis, the Istituto Superiore di Sanita, and the Fondazione Giovanni Lorenzini,... 

After the success of the two previous meetings on Typing of Hyperlipoproteinemias, in Milan in 1971 and in Rome in 1972, an important part of each of which was devoted to the discussion of therapy, the Italian Society for the Study of Atherosclerosis, the Istituto Superiore di Sanita, and the Fondazione Giovanni Lorenzini planned a special treatment of this important topic This meeting was held in Rome in November 1973 at the Istituto Superiore di Sanita. On this occasion the most important subjects developed in recent years by the most qualified centers of experimental and clinical research were reported.

He became implicated in the "Affair of the Diamond Necklace" in 1785-6 and was banished from France.

This volume derives from papers presented at the 4th biennial meeting of the Italian Biophysical Society, held in Parma in October 1979. In the hydroformylation of olefins, he studied the mechanism and the industrial apphcations of the process in collaboration with Montedison SpA. The results of Piacenti s scientific work appeared in prestigious national and international journals, led to the filing of several patents and the conferral of the gold medal of the Division of Industrial Chemistry of the Italian Chemical Society in June 2002, a month before his death.
