Despite these difficulties, this chapter will examine the Byzantine system of orphan care simply to determine whether it protected orphans from physical want by providing food, shelter, and some education. Whether it succeeded in fostering moral and spiritual growth is a question beyond the ken of human scholarship. [Pg.248]

Although no records survive that provide any statistical information [Pg.248]

For an example of how complete the records are from some orphanages of Renaissance Italy, see Gavitt, Charity, who presents a thorough study of the Ospedale degli Innocent of Florence from 1410 to 1536. [Pg.248]

Theodore of Stoudios, Ep. 211 (p. 333) refers to the early-ninth-century orphanage outside Prousa (see Chapter Five, p. 133). Typhcn Kecharitomene, chap. 5 (p. 41). describes a twelfth-century monastery for women that was always to care for two orphan girls. [Pg.248]

When a production or injection well is drilled, it is common practice to cement in place a casing which extends across the reservoir interval. The alternative is to leave the reservoir uncased, in a so-called bare foot completion, which is rarely done. When the drilling department finishes its work on the well, it is often left in the state of a cased hole, as on the left of Figure 9.14. [Pg.227]

The automatic acquisition and analysis system we developed within the scope of the Super-Phenix steam generator tube inspection by ultrasonic arrays is a remarkable example of an exhaustive acoustic verification system. It works for every type of probe for tube inspection. [Pg.824]

Wlien a strong electron-donor ligand such as pyridine is added to tlie reaction mixture, it can bond so strongly to tlie Rli tliat it essentially drains off all tlie Rli and shuts down tlie cycle it is called a catalyst poison. One way to describe the conformation of a molecule other than by Cartesian or intern coordinates is in terms of the distances between all pairs of atoms. There are N(N - )/ interatomic distances in a molecule, which are most conveniently represented using a N X N S5munetric matrix. In such a matrix, the elements (i, j) and (j, i) contain the distant between atoms i and and the diagonal elements are all zero. Distance geometry explort conformational space by randomly generating many distance matrices, which are the converted into conformations in Cartesian space. The crucial feature about distance geometi (and the reason why it works) is that it is not possible to arbitrarily assign values to ti... [Pg.483]

The activity of an enzyme varies considerably with acidity and there is generally a marked optimum pH for each enzyme. Thus pepsin of the stomach has an optimum pH of 1 4, i.e., it works best in a decidedly acid medium. It is inactive in neutral or alkaline solutions and the latter rapidly destroy it. [Pg.509]

Our Simpson s rule program is written in QBASIC (Appendix A). Today s computer world is full of complicated and expensive software, some of which we shall use in later chapters. Unfortunately, it is not hard to find software that is overpriced and overwritten (which we shall not use). Although it is not appropriate to recommend software in a book of this kind, the simple software used here has been used for several years in both a teaching and a research setting. It works. [Pg.12]

While idly dreaming over these equations (theoretieians eall it working ) we might happen to notiee that the linear eombination (9-24b) we have seleeted for ground-state helium is the same as the expansion of a 2 x 2 determinant... [Pg.269]

PM3/TM is an extension of the PM3 method to include d orbitals for use with transition metals. Unlike the case with many other semiempirical methods, PM3/TM s parameterization is based solely on reproducing geometries from X-ray diffraction results. Results with PM3/TM can be either reasonable or not depending on the coordination of the metal center. Certain transition metals tend to prefer a specific hybridization for which it works well. [Pg.37]

A much more forgiving yet limited extraction method can be used to isolate phenol species such as eugenol and chavicol. You see farther back in this chapter where one can use dilute NaOH to remove eugenol from sassafras oil Well, why not use it to isolate the damn things for further research. It works like a charm ... [Pg.52]

Distillation is always the most reliable way of separating things from complex mixtures such as relieving our P2P from its annoying black contaminants just like what was done above. But wouldn t it be nice if there was another way to do it for those without a distillation apparatus or who Just didn t have the time to distill Well, there actually is such a way, and it works fabulously ... [Pg.57]

For molecules similar to safrole or allylbenzene we take the work done on any terminal alkene such as 1-heptene, 1 octene. Another term to look for is olefin which is a term for a doublebond containing species. What we then look for are articles about these olefins where the functional groups we are looking for are formed. Articles with terminology like methyl ketones from (P2P), ketones from , amines from etc. Or when we want to see about new ways to aminate a ketone (make final product from P2P) we look for any article about ketones where amines are formed. Sound like science fiction to you Well, how do you think we came up with half the recipes in this book It works ... [Pg.183]

A regioselective aldol condensation described by Biichi succeeds for sterical reasons (G. Biichi, 1968). If one treats the diaidehyde given below with acid, both possible enols are probably formed in a reversible reaaion. Only compound A, however, is found as a product, since in B the interaction between the enol and ester groups which are in the same plane hinders the cyclization. BOchi used acid catalysis instead of the usual base catalysis. This is often advisable, when sterical hindrance may be important. It works, because the addition of a proton or a Lewis acid to a carbonyl oxygen acidifies the neighbouring CH-bonds. [Pg.55]

Using MRI as a substitute for X ray tomography IS only the first of what are many medical applica tions More he on the horizon If for example the rate of data acquisition could be increased then it would become possible to make the leap from the equivalent of still photographs to motion pictures One could watch the inside of the body as it works— see the heart beat see the lungs expand and con tract—rather than merely examine the structure of an organ... [Pg.546]

In order for the primary photoelectron, which is bound to the surface atom with binding energy to be detected ia xps, the electron must have sufficient kinetic energy to overcome, ia addition to E the overall attractive potential of the spectrometer described by its work function, Thus, the measured kinetic energy of this photoelectron, Ej is given by... [Pg.275]

The source requited for aes is an electron gun similar to that described above for electron microscopy. The most common electron source is thermionic in nature with a W filament which is heated to cause electrons to overcome its work function. The electron flux in these sources is generally proportional to the square of the temperature. Thermionic electron guns are routinely used, because they ate robust and tehable. An alternative choice of electron gun is the field emission source which uses a large electric field to overcome the work function barrier. Field emission sources ate typically of higher brightness than the thermionic sources, because the electron emission is concentrated to the small area of the field emission tip. Focusing in both of these sources is done by electrostatic lenses. Today s thermionic sources typically produce spot sizes on the order of 0.2—0.5 p.m with beam currents of 10 A at 10 keV. If field emission sources ate used, spot sizes down to ca 10—50 nm can be achieved. [Pg.283]

How Many Samples. A first step in deciding how many samples to collect is to divide what constitutes an overexposure by how much or how often an exposure can go over the exposure criteria limit before it is considered important. Given this quantification of importance it is then possible to calculate, using an assumed variabihty, how many samples are required to demonstrate just the significance of an important difference if one exists (5). This is the minimum number of samples required for each hypothesis test, but more samples are usually collected. In the usual tolerance limit type of testing where the criteria is not more than some fraction of predicted exceedances at some confidence level, increasing the number of samples does not increase confidence as much as in tests of means. Thus it works out that the incremental benefit above about seven samples is small. [Pg.107]

The lUPAC Commission on Nomenclature of Inorganic Chemistry continues its work, which is effectively open-ended. Guidance in the use of lUPAC rules (38) as well as explanations of their formulation (39) are available. A second volume on nomenclature of inorganic chemistry is in preparation it will be devoted to specialized areas. Some of the contents have had preliminary pubHcation in the journal Pure andJipplied Chemist, eg, "Names and Symbols of Transfermium Elements" in 1944. [Pg.117]

Electrochemical Microsensors. The most successful chemical microsensor in use as of the mid-1990s is the oxygen sensor found in the exhaust system of almost all modem automobiles (see Exhaust control, automotive). It is an electrochemical sensor that uses a soHd electrolyte, often doped Zr02, as an oxygen ion conductor. The sensor exemplifies many of the properties considered desirable for all chemical microsensors. It works in a process-control situation and has very fast (- 100 ms) response time for feedback control. It is relatively inexpensive because it is designed specifically for one task and is mass-produced. It is relatively immune to other chemical species found in exhaust that could act as interferants. It performs in a very hostile environment and is reHable over a long period of time (36). [Pg.392]
