The physical properties of the Isopar grade of isoparaffinic solvents produced by Exxon chemical are shown in Table 15.2. The Isopar series of eight solvents cover a distillation range of 98-3H°C, have flash points from 18°F to a high of 239°F, have low surface tensions in the range of 20-30 dynes/cm, and recommended allowable vapor exposure threshold limit values (TLV) of 300-400 ppm. The Isopar isoparaffinic hydrocarbon blends sold by Exxon (Table 15.2) have low odor, selective solvency, good oxidation stability, low electrical conductivity, and low skin irritation. The Isopar solvents are well suited for the manufacture of electrostatic copying fluids, odor-free paints, waterless hand cleaners, and many proprietary household products. The CSSX process utilizes a novel solvent made up of four components calix[4]arene-bis-(4-fer/-octylbenzo-crown-6) known as BOBCalixC6 as extractant a lipophilic fluorinated alcohol, l-(2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropoxy)-3-(4-. ec-butylphenoxy)-2-propanol known as Cs-7SB, as diluent modifier tri- -octylamine as a suppressor of impurity effects and the isoparaffinic diluent Isopar L, a mixture of branched hydrocarbons with an average chain-length of 12 carbons. Figure 3 shows the composition of the solvent as currently optimized for the SWPF application at the SRS [37,49], The chemistry of the solvent is well understood, with regards to both its fundamental properties and its performance under process conditions. All of the components are commercially available, and efficient synthetic and purification procedures have been worked out [17,18,37], Thus, these key components may be obtained from multiple chemical suppliers capable of specialty synthesis. 

An isoparaffinic diluent, Isopar L, available from ExxonMobil Chemical Company, was chosen for the CSSX solvent. Isopar L is a blend of Ci0 to Cn branched alkanes with a distillation range of 185-211 °C, a viscosity of 1.6 centipoise at 25 °C, a specific gravity of 0.765-0.772 g/mL at 60 °F (15.6 °C), and a thermal closed-cup flash point of at least 60 °C (data courtesy of ExxonMobil Chemical Company). Thermal dissociation of tren NaBr was studied, and the results are summarized in Table IX. In these experiments thermal dissociation was done by extracting the solid complex in a Soxhlet apparatus with a high-boiling hydrocarbon solvent. The solvent was Isopar G, an isoparaffinic distillation fraction boiling at 159° to 177 °C. During the extraction the hot solvent bathes the complex and causes its dissociation. The insoluble salt is simultaneously separated from the polyamine which dissolves in the hot solvent. When the hydrocarbon-tren solution is cooled, a phase separation occurs since polyamines containing primary (and secondary) nitrogens have low solubilities in paraffins at ambient temperature (5).

The problem of odour, though not VOC, has been much reduced by the development of vinyl acrylate copolymers which are soluble in low aromatic and de-aromatised hydrocariwns. Pliolite VT and Plioway resins from Goodyear may be used with aromatic free hydrocarbons, such as the Exxsol D series from (Esso / Exxon), or the isoparaffinic, low odour solvents, such as Shellsol T (Shell) or the Isopar range (Esso).
