Sasol Solvents

There are about 15 MIBK production plants in the world today with a capacity of about 750 million pounds annually in 2010. The four largest producers are Shell Chemical (France, The Netherlands, USA), Dow Chemical (USA), Celanese (Mexico), and Sasol Solvents (South Africa). [Pg.468]

Synthol coproducts include alcohols, ketones, and lower paraffins. They are used mainly as solvents in the paint and printing industries, although some alcohols are blended into fuels. In 1992 Sasol began producing 17,500 t/yr 1-butanol [71-36-3] from 5-07-acetaldehyde [75-07-0] and plaimed to start a plant to produce high purity ethanol [64-17-5] in 1993. Acetone [67-64-1] and methyl ethyl ketone [78-93-3] are two ketone coproducts sold as solvents. [Pg.168]

Hydrocarbon waxes produced in a fixed-bed reactor, which has operated since 1955, have found a variety of uses. Also, byproducts from the Sasol Lurgi coal gasifiers are recovered for chemical and solvent applications. These products include phenol, cresols, toluene, xylenes, ammonia, and sulfur. An addition to the spectrum of chemical products from Sasol is polypropylene. Also, ethane is being cracked to supplement ethylene production for sale to polyethylene producers. Additional work is in progress to evaluate the recovery of organic acids from aqueous waste streams. [Pg.898]

Modifications have recently been proposed for the Dimersol and the Phillips processes by Institut Frangais du Petrol and Sasol Technologies, respectively, based on the use of an ionic liquid such as imidazolium tetra-chloroaluminate (Figure 17), which is liquid at room temperature and an excellent solvent for the organometallic catalyst. [Pg.193]
