Chemical and Other Specialty Manufacture A wide variety of products may be derived from petroleum feed stocks, including such diverse materials as alcohols, butyl rubber, sulfur, additives, and resins. Other specialties such as solvent naphthas, white oils, Isopars, Varsol, may also be produced. As indicated previously the respective chemical affiliate usually has responsibility for products broadly classified as petrochemicals. 

The results of these bioassays on extraetants and modifiers are shown in Table 7.7a and for diluents in Table 7.7b. It is interesting to note the wide range of toleranee limits that are shown for the various extractants. Many show a toxic effect below their solubility level. Also, the toxicity of the Solvesso 150 and Isopar L diluents was acute compared with the other diluents examined.

Slowly add water and Kaopolite SF to mixture of other ingredients. Sift in Bentone 38 if low shear mixing equipment is used. Solvents other than Stoddard may be used depending on the desired drying rate. Kerosene may be added to slow the evaporation rate. Isopar L and Isopar M (Exxon Company) combinations are also excellent. 

Other solvents may be used depending upon the degree of drying rate desired. Kerosene slows the evaporation rate, while combinations of Isopar L and Isopar M (Exxon Oil Co.) are also excellent solvent substitutes. 

Add Isopar K at ambient temperature. Stir until dissolved (30 mi nutes).
