Block copolymers between alkyl acrylates such as B-4,358 B-5,202,203 and B-6,203 on the other hand, have been synthesized by the macroinitiator methods mostly with copper catalysts. Star block copolymers with a soft poly(MA) core and a hard poly(isobomyl acrylate) shell were synthesized by using multifunctional initiators.358 Poly(tBA) segments in B-5 and B-6 can be converted into hydrophilic poly(acrylic acid).203 Block copolymers between />methylstyrene and styrene (B-7) were also prepared by the rhenium-catalyzed living radical polymerization in conjunction with an alkyl iodide initiator.169... 

The stracture-property correlation of different copolymers with n-butyl acrylate and isobomyl acrylate units have been studied. The primary goal was to compare thermomechanical properties of block, gradient and statistical copolymers of nBA and IBA with various acrylate homopolymers (Scheme 1). The choice of nBA and IBA was dictated by very different thermal properties of the resulting homopolymers, glass transition temperature (Tg) of PnBA is -54°C while the Tg of PIBA is 94°C. Thus, their copolymerization with carefully selected ratios should result in polymers with thermal properties, i.e., Tg similar to acrylate homopolymers poly(t-butyl acrylate) (PtBA), poly(methyl acrylate) (PMA), poly(ethyl acrylate) (PEA) and poly(n-propyl acrylate) (PPA). 

The tetra- and hexafunctional initiators shown in Scheme 30 have been used for the polymerization of styrene and acrylates. The resulting stars had low PDIs, and the molecular weights obtained by SEC equipped with the lALLS detector and viscometry showed a good correlation with the theoretical values. In addition, a 6-armed star-block copolymer composed of a PMMA core and poly (isobomyl acrylate) shell was synthesized in this work.
