Iron suppl

Speaking further of inorganic metals or metallic compounds, in a letter on page 111 of the June 2002 issue of the Townsend Letter for Doctors Patients, frequent contributor Wayne Marlin first mentions how iron-deficient anemia develops in patients with a bacterial infection hence, iron suppl ents can be viewed presumably as advisable. He then reports on work by Professor Harold Foster of the University of Victoria, Canada, about selenium being antiviral, which was earlier... 

All patients received pressure off-loading, nutritional assessment and supplementation, and best-practice local wound care. Comorbid conditions such as diabetes were medically managed. All patients received rHuEPO 75IU/kg subcutaneously three times weekly for 6 weeks. Iron supple-mentation with oral ferrous gluconate as indicated by ferritin levels was administered.
