Gluconate ferrous

Ferrous gluconate is a black dye. It is composed of iron bound to two molecules of gluconic acid, which is the acid form of glucose. 

Ferrous gluconate is the black dye used to color ripe olives. It is also used as an iron supplement to treat iron-deficiency anemia.

Iron salts, such as ferrous sulfate or ferrous gluconate, are used in the treatment of iron deficiency anemia, which occurs when there is a loss of iron that is greater than the available iron stored in the body. Iron preparations act by elevating the serum iron concentration, which replenishes hemoglobin and depleted iron stores. 

Pigments such as titanium dioxide and ferrous gluconate are also added to foods. 

Ferrous Gluconate Dissolve 0.3 g in 5 ml of DW and perform the test as described in 2 above. Complies with the limit test for sulphates (500 ppm). 

Oxalate is found to be a frequent impurity in pharmaceutical substances belonging to the category of either organic acids e.g.. anhydrous citric acid, tartaric acid or salts of organic acids e.g., ferrous gluconate, sodium citrate, potassium citrate and sodium cromoglycate. Ferrous Gluconate Dissolve 5.0 g in a mixture of 10 ml 1 M II2S04 and 40 ml DW. Shake the soln. with 50 ml ether for 5 minutes. Separate the aqueous layer and shake with a further 20 ml ether for 5 mts. Combine the ethereal layers, evaporate the filtrate to 5 ml and add 1 ml of 2 M acetic acid and 1.5 ml solution of CaCl2. No precipitate is produced within 30 minutes.

Therapy is perfectly adequate with simple iron salts (Table 2). In adults ferrous gluconate, fumarate or sulphate are all of proven equal efficiency. Approximately 50 mg of iron is present in each tablet with the remaining 300 mg made up with an inert filler. These are given on an empty stomach at least twice a day but should nausea prevail they can be taken with food. Absorption of slow release preparations is not recommended since iron is detached from the carrier beyond the main areas of absorption in the duodenum or jejunum. Stools turn black in all cases and this is a useful index of patient compliance. In 25% of individuals gastrointestinal tract side effects are encountered in the form of diarrhoea or constipation and patients will often spontaneously discontinue medication. It is therefore essential that a tablet-count be carried out on a regular basis with a substitute being provided when this first-line medication is intolerable.
